First run off the treadmill. It took a bit of organising (was meant to go yesterday but couldn't find my waist-band-phone-holder thingy so I cracked the sh!ts and aborted) yes, petulant pathetic effort. But moving off the treadmill is a big deal as other treadmill runners may agree. What to wear? Will I feel stupid? Will I feel embarrassed? etc etc.
So with 3 days rest since my last run on Saturday, I had to go today. Weather was perfect, 22°C so the What To Wear issue was easy. Found the phone holder thing. Hit play on the podcast and off I went. The 5 minute warm-up walk was over before I knew it and then it was time! And I went SLOW and it was HARD but I kept going. Strange, feeling like a first-time runner but with 7 weeks work under my belt I was able to keep going. The last 5 minutes of the run I could easily have walked but no way!
Summary: it's most definitely easier running on the treadmill even with an incline. So if you're thinking about moving outside don't think too long!! And feeling embarrassed/stupid/too old etc etc? Nah, I was pretty proud of myself. I really dreaded this first outdoor run but now it's over I can't wait till the next one!!
Thanks for helping me get this far everyone!!

Spoken like a true .... moon-walker? Haha thank you, there's no stopping now! And there was plenty of smiling! I'm looking forward to taking in all the beauty of nature that you described recently, once my endurance improves.😁
It's damp with it. We've had torrential rain showers here on and off for a few days. Some places have been flooded.
I'm going out running later this morning and will be wearing: a base layer with long sleeves, a fluorescent yellow top layer with slightly fleecy insides, my usual shorts, medium length thick socks and a peaked cap.
It's not quite cold enough yet to break out the running tights.
It's all a matter of what you're acclimatised to. It takes about two to three weeks to get used to a change in environment. We were all moaning in July about how hot it was, but when similar temperatures happened in August we'd mostly got used to them.
And shorts... my legs don't tend to get cold on a run but my upper body does.
Yes I guess that's right about your torso being the most important area to be warm. I wore leggings today and would've been more comfy in shorts. But I wasn't too hot! It all felt great.
Yes yes and yes! But in a good way if that makes any sense. It was SO much more interesting and enjoyable outside. I have no idea how far I ran in the 25 minutes and honestly I don't care. I'm pretty sure I will be far from 5km at graduation but that's fine! Are you tempted to give it a try?
Yeah I’m willing myself to do it and you’ve made it sound so much fun!!!! Once I get some proper outside running shoes I’ll give it a go! It’s worth at least a try if only to giggle at myself 😅
Oh I'm so excited for you! Do a bit of planning beforehand or you'll waste an entire day like I did! 😄 You sound as if that good motivating book of positive energy is rubbing off on you!!!
Ah well done you! I switched at around week 7 on c25k and like you was terrified but now I love getting up and heading out for a run keep going and well done again!! 😊
Well after the first run it literally killed me I thought I’d never be able to go again but I persevered and it definitely gets easier - I go every other day and run for 30 minutes but slowly going to try and go a bit further - on rest days I do Lesley sansone fitness walking on ‘you tube’ and that has definitely helped my fitness levels it does get easier and nature is a beautiful thing!
I'll look up that fitness walking gal for rest days. Thanks Shandy1 you're giving me hope!🙏🙂 When Laura told me there was 60 seconds to go and maybe I could up the pace and end on a high ... I laughed. On the inside. On the outside there was less laughing and more grimacing.
Welcome to the world of INDOORS and OUTDOORS running.
Because you've started off on a treadmill, you are now in the advantageous and envious position of having 2 options rather than being limited to just one. Treadmills are incredibly useful and I've used them for 30% of my runs over the last 6 years. Certainly useful here in Liverpool (Beatles-land) , in the north-west of England when the wind can be very blowy coming off the River Mersey, in the freezing cold and driving rain ...
Cold and rain is ok. But the Unholy Trinity, as I call it, cold rain AND wind... that I can quite happily pass on.
But there are plenty of people who love nothing more than running/walking in quite miserable conditions here in the UK and other parts of Northern Europe. Try Iceland or Scandinavia on for size!
Glad you enjoyed running outdoors. If you enjoyed that just wait for your first run in the rain-sounds mad but now that you are a runner you are officially allowed to run through puddles splashing like a child. Embrace the elements! (safely obviously)
glad you enjoyed your outdoor run deciding on a route and then navigating it can add a bit of pressure but its part of the preparation for me now as I lay out my things I am thinking OK what time is sunrise is it wet and what route will I take. None as scenic as some of the beautiful pictures but it local.
I graduated C25K May 2020 all on the treadmill.I was very self conscious of an outside run, but after gratuating I decided that I needed to do this properly.
I wanted longer runs and the prospect of boredom on the treadmill was not a good thought.
I took myself outside and have never looked back!! 😁
My treadmill now gathers dust and cobwebs as haven't used it since.
I love being outside taking in the sights and smells (even the pig farm on my route)
3 virtual HM under my belt now.
And yes, I love it when it rains!!
Good luck with your journey however you decide to take it. 🤞😅😁
