First 5k for 8.5 months!

Hi all you inspirational people on your C25k journeys,

Thought I would share. This is especially for everyone who is a ‘ gentle’ runner... I ran 5k today in 48 minutes! And I’m very happy too..

The last time I did it was New Years Eve and it was 47 minutes something. I graduated around a year ago, but didn’t get up to 5k until about December time and only did it 3 or 4 times. Then we had snow, ice, a painful shoulder, lockdown and I got right out the habit of regular running, especially with the gym shut. ( I run outside mainly but hate being cold and wet). By March/ April I was heavier than I had ever been in my life non pregnant and only running occasionally, I decided to re- start,,and amazingly could still run for 30 mins but only with the aid of the Japanese slow running video and with a big effort. Numerous joint niggles along the way.... etc etc.

Anyhow, I have lost 12 lb and really suddenly just feel a bit better running! Last weekend I jumped up to 4K, really slow, then 2 days later 5 minutes faster! ( by avoiding forest paths, mud and tree roots) Then a few days off with a sore foot ( happens to me a lot, and lower back pain, and shoulder pain... moan, moan, moan ). Today I just set out to test the foot...and kept going! So there we are .. 5k again at last. Totally unexpected.

hope that helps anyone who is worried the rest of the world can run 5k in 30 mins! There is room for all abilities on this great programme.

Happy Sunday everyone.

Well done.

Many of us have to repeat the plan for personal or health reasons and you know what........it always works.

Only a small proportion of graduates from this forum who responded to a poll, managed 5k in 30 minutes by graduation healthunlocked.com/couchto5....

Graduation requirements are that you complete three thirty minute runs, regardless of distance.

Thanks. I didn’t even repeat the plan actually.. that’s how great it is. I could still trot for 30 mins slowly even after the gap. It just took me a very very long time to be able to do more than 3k or so. But I just kept doing it and I got there in the end.

That's fab, and I'm totally in the just sub 50 minutes 5Km group, just pleased to be out there at all! Good job.

Thank you. I agree. I would never have believed I could keep on the move for so long- just thankful.

That’s awesome, good to know you can still run that far, my fastest ever was 40 mins but most about 46-48 mins and there’s lots of us at that time, we’ll done, it’s a long time running

I did my first Park Run yesterday, with a friend at my shoulder gently encouraging me. I walked a few times but ran most of it, and finished - to my astonishment - in 47.25. That's faster than I've ever run on the 30' solo runs. I'm nearly 70 and still overweight (although I've lost over 5 stone in the last year - slowly slowly) but really feeling the benefits both mental and physical. So well done you, and keep going. Who cares if we're slow!

Who cares indeed. I am in awe. I can’t imagine still being able to run 5k 15 years from now. How brilliant are you!
