Sprained Ankle and running πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ

I sprained my ankle in February, slipped on black ice while out for a gentle stroll with a friend. It was ironic given that I have managed to run through snow, sleet, slush and black ice through the winter. Physio confirmed no permanent damage but no running was advised until the pain stopped. After 10 weeks now I can get upto 7km walk but my ankle still swells up and I am wobbly if I try to put weight on it. It settles over night mostly. My question is to those who have had similar experiences, how long after the injury they were able to get back to running just so that I can think positively as you can imagine I am desperate to go back out but don’t want to jeopardise the recovery! Any tips, ideas, support welcome πŸ™ β˜€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸŒ·πŸ€©

So it will mend, patience is the key thing we all mend differently.

I did my ankle on a squash court, and it's all good now, but it takes time. I my was suggested by a Dr I played squash with about learning to balance to get that strength back. He mentioned the trick with the board on a cushion so you can balance on the injured ankle and pivot to get the mobility back do it doesn't mend leaving you with restrictive movement. But also simply when sitting, rolling your ankle, simply exercises like pointing toes and almost writing the alphabet in the air, try these things....... Oh and walking, and the ice as basics they'll all help.

Thanks so much for taking the time out to reply. I have been given ankle exercises but great tip to keep moving it So good to know that you have recovered fully- just the thing I am looking for - hope! so that I can be more patient πŸ™πŸ˜ŠπŸ€©

Patience = recovery and as Oldfloss rightly pointed out, definitely do get some advice if it's not mending properly πŸ‘.

I had to get my initial sprain strapped up, but it was too swollen to allow an X-ray, so I had to wait a few days before they'd do that for me.

I returned to the squash court, albeit I was mindful of that ankle and used an ankle strap for quite a while afterwards

We are not experts and would suggest that even though you have seen a Physio', getting it checked out by a medical expert could be helpful.Hidden has given you some tips which worked in his case, but as we are all different.. if these are not helping and there is still swelling, then please do get a medical opinion.

We do say, never run through pain.

Because of relatively poor blood flow, ankles can take a long time to heal.............I was away from running for about a month last time I very lightly twisted an ankle.

To improve blood flow, cycling may be appropriate as it keeps the joint mobile aiding recovery, without weight bearing.
