Week 8 run 2 fail 😢

Feeling a bit despondent. Amazingly did run one and it was hard but I was so happy

I went out yesterday and my little boy came on his scooter. He’s fast and I think my speed was too much. Ten mins in I had to stop

I know everyone’s going to tell me to slow it down as I’ve been an idiot. Wish me luck for a second attempt. Feeling a bit worried I’m not going to get there now

"Feeling a bit worried I’m not going to get there now"

Get where exactly?

Re: your alleged 'fail' (please don't use the F-word), think of this... I've been running for 6 years ... I've done around 4200 miles/6900 km in that time ... do you think that in those 6 years every single run has felt wonderful and was a 'success' (whatever that means)? No, of course not. Some good, some bad - that's the way it goes.

You **WILL** complete C25K and soon. After that, you hopefully have many happy years of running ahead of you . The running world is your oyster.

Crack on :-)

Thank you. Inspired ! I did it. Went out tonight and it was rough but finished ! What do you personally do if your calves get tight? I’m doing allThe usual stretching roller etc but it’s still a problem ?

Fatheadcymru73 profile image

I had exactly that problem Dynamic stretches before hand seems to have sorted it for me !!

That’s when you lift your ankles and then turn your feet in and out and repeat, yes ? I’ve been doing them too. I think it’s 30 years of sitting at a desk and I willPerhaps just have to keep stretching daily and build it up a bit. Then one day I might even reach your mileage which is incredible !

Have you tried compression socks as well as the dynamic stretching? I found they helped me-obviously I can only speak for me here. Stay hydrated too, to help the blood flow to the muscles.

Yes I have the socks. I’m going to get my gait tested as soon as the shops open because on some runs the calf pain starts to niggle on the warm up walk. I wondered if new shoes would helps? I have lightstrike which are quite flat ? Thank you

I'd love to comment on shoes, but I've literally been running in Lidl running shoes as shops are closed here too. There are a few good pre run stretch videos on YouTube that do dynamic stretch routines and that made a big difference for me. Just keep it slow. My run pace was generally between 9 and 10k/m, but I've seen higher. There is no shame in running slow, especially to prevent injury. I think running slower was actually the game changer that made it achievable to me. Of course we'll see how I far on Monday for consolidation run #1!

Yayyy ! Thank you. I’m anywhere between 8 and 9 at the moment but not so worried about any of that so long as I can sort my calves. I think they just have to keep up with my enthusiasm ! Good luck for your next run !

One of the things I like about your posts is that you tell it as it is. Looking forward to you telling me how it was to begin this run again. Go bad run go !

You're doing great! It sounds like you were going a little too fast as you were probably concentrating on your son, which is understandable, and you seem to know that already.

I don't know about you, but I have to focus on keeping in mind the pace I need to get to the end, which is extreeeemly slow. If my focus is diverted to something else, my pace creeps up to what feels like a natural running speed for my body. Unfortunately I can't maintain that speed over a good distance right now, so I just get too tired and don't last.

If all it is is that your focus was on your son, just try again by yourself and you'll be able to focus on keeping your speed down. You'll likely do better and last longer. Even if you still don't reach the end I pretty much guarantee you'll last longer, and that is STILL an improvement. Just stick to that week until you can finish comfortably.

I'm sorry you're worried you won't reach the end of the C25K programme, but I don't think this run is indicative of that. It's a blip, keep going! Good luck!

I’m the same. I have to slow down my natural pace or i would never do it ! It’s hard because my fitness - and calves - obviously don’t match my pace 😂

The calves are a nightmare! I don’t think it helps that where I’ve been running is either on a gentle incline (despite not feeling at all gentle) or is quite up and down. Do you feel like sometimes the leg pain is limiting more than your breathing?

I hope the leg pain eases soon, and I think you’re doing really well!

Badrun profile image
BadrunGraduate in reply to Buglet14

Exactly this. I feel I could run further if the calves were stronger

I really hope when things open up safely we can access a masseuse and get a good sports massage. In the meantime it’s foam rolling and stretching pretty much every day, but we just need someone with no mercy who knows what they’re doing :(

You are already a star for doing this program. Can’t add much more to what others have already said. I can honestly tell you I am barely clinging on during my runs and have felt despondent more times than I can remember. You are definitely no idiot and you have definitely got this! You can definitely do this, keep going! 👏👏👏👏👏

It’s ok to have a less than ideal run.... frustrating but ok. You’re putting distance on your legs that will help you on the next run.

I found that I really needed to focus on what I was doing in week 8. I had a tendency to go off too fast and I really had to make a conscious effort to keep it steady. Maybe try the run by yourself... you know you can do it, you’ve done it before.

You will get there... you’ve passed the point of no return now kiddo! Dig deep, get it done. Know that you can do it!! ☺️

Hi Badrun ...firstly, try not to feel despondent..you’ve identified the reason for this bad run...and it can be fixed...you’ll feel better after your next run I am sure!! And...there’s no such thing as the F word...

Remember, you’re new to this so..

F -first

A - attempt

I - in

L - learning

That’s what it stands for...so if ever you feel like that again, dust yourself down, bag the mileage and try again 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You’re doing well, I def wouldn’t try to keep up with my kids on scooters!! 🤪

You've followed the plan all the way and built your stamina to do run 1 week 8, it takes two weeks to lose any fitness so you haven’t done that in 48 hours, you were multi tasking which is how it is sometimes & you had fun with your little boy and thats def not a fail, so get out there and blow the cobwebs away, you’ve got this!!

Thanks to absolutely everyone for your words of encouragement. I went out tonight. I’d like to say I smashed it but I didn’t 😂 but I DID finish. Thanks all again ❤️

We've all had similar experiences, and to fail occasionally is only human. The positive is that he must be fit and strong, and being out is so much better for him than watching TV or playing on a computer!
