Runners’ yoga?

The main side effect of the chemo I’m on at the moment is aching joints and stiffness. I’m used to it most of the time now, having been like this since probably around August, but now that I’ve started trying to run again I’m really noticing how reluctant my ankles are to move for the first couple of minutes of running time. So tonight I’ve tried a yoga session (Yoga for Runners, with Adriene) - let’s see if I can keep that up on my non-running days and if it helps...Has anyone been through similar, and if so, what worked?

You really are inspirational RainbowC. I would hope the yoga helps. You are amazingly brave!

Not brave or inspirational I’m afraid - just not going to give up until I have to! ;) I was wanting to start running again just around the time I was diagnosed, but over a period of about 2-3 weeks went from being fine, just tired and overweight to discovering I was actually very seriously ill! Stage IV cancer is a b*gger (can I say that here?!) - it may have taken away the prospect of a long future, but I’m not going to let it take my present too!

I haven't been through similar but I do love yoga with Adrienne and have done her 30 days with yoga lots of times. While I'm running I'm grateful to her Breathe daily yoga from. I was doing daily yoga before c25k but am now trying to at least do it on my rest days. I really hope it helps you.

Hi, I am so sorry to hear your story, it is amazing you are brave and mentally so strong to keep running, I am sure it will inspire many around you.

On the subject I can say that I am a member of the long Covid support group for people struggling with long Covid and experiencing achy joints, severe fatigue and many other symptoms that are similar to the side effects of the cancer treatment on every day basis. Yoga is definitely a number one suggestion (there are chair yoga sessions for days you feel less strong as many of us struggle to walk), also Pilates is very good for strengthening and stretching, I personally prefer it. Many also found that using cold showers (after you have you hot one), wim hof method, really helps with joints pain.

I don’t know how helpful it is but I just want to wish you well.

I find yoga really helpful but although I love her voice and Benji the dog, I can't seem to get on with Adriene's yoga, finding it too demanding, especially on the wrists. I use Ekhart yoga for classes but have developed my own personal practice from what I have learned there too.

Sometimes the right sort of gentle yoga can still be mentally challenging and exposing, especially when you are generally in 'getting on with life' mode amidst such significant issues, so be prepared for that.
