To all the “older” new runners

I just thought I’d pop by to say well done! I was an older new runner just about 18 months ago, and I’m still here running (very slowly still) but enjoying it hugely. I’ve had lots of ups and downs since graduation but I’ve always bounced back (sometimes literally). Ran a 5K today which I really did enjoy, and I’m planning to do that two or three times a week until I run 5K on my 74th birthday in December and on Christmas Day too. If anyone had said to me even 2 years ago that I’d be writing that I’d have said they were crazy... Looking to get to 10K next year some time!! I remember week 1 very well (hiding on back lanes in case I was seen). Now I’m planning my 2nd pair of running shoes and I have a drawer full of Lycra! 🤪🏃‍♀️

Well done Bettyb719 on continuing to run, I am the same age as you although I won't be 74 until May.

I began C25K run 1 week 1 in April 2018 when I was "only" 71 and graduated in June of that year by which time I was 72, it took me 13 months to get to my first parkrun in July of this year by which time I was 73, I have now ran 10/ 5K parkruns, 4/10Ks and? 5Ks locally, good luck to you for your quest to run a 10K next year. 😊 🏃🏾

thank you for that inspiration Bettyb! I do wonder sometimes how I’ll ever get beyond the super slow that I manage at the moment but as you say, the important thing is that I’m out there doing something. So I shall continue to do my 5k joffle along the seafront for now and then perhaps try to go for 10k next year. See you there!

Just had to join in this thread. I am also 73 - will be 74 in February. Like you I started this adventure about 18months ago. I absolutely love it, although I have spent a fair amount of time on the injury couch due to being somewhat stupid on occasion. Nothing serious - my body, especially knees and ankles, just really protested about what was being asked of them. With hindsight I should've listened to Laura about taking it slowly (sounds as if you did), and also bought some proper running shoes earlier!

Never mind, I'm slowly getting there and always love hearing tales of my fellow 'grown-up' runners and their experiences. Keep on running Bettyb, and everyone else too.

Get us! Despite some time on the injury couch, we are still in there! Going out for a run tomorrow with my daughter (who says she was inspired by me!). She doesn’t live near enough for us to do that often, but it’s nice when we do. She’s way faster than me, but that’s ok, she’s just a youngster!
