Someone suggested I try out NRC and so I downloaded it. But can someone give me a hand on how it works? I would like to try some of the guided runs, but how do they work? Do they immediately start with running? Or is there a five minute warm-up walk included? Are there guided runs with walking intervals? Any advice, tips, info, anything is welcome!
There is a countdown option in settings but no warm up walk so I just press start when I feel ready and it counts down from then (mine is 9 seconds). I have done a fair few and although they can be a bit twee I do enjoy them because it's a distraction to listen to someone talking to you with some helpful suggestions. I haven't found one with walking but there are some with intervals where you can run easy between each. If you look at the description of what you want to download if gives you an idea of what is involved. Have a look at the tab that says guided runs. You can use their music selection via Spotify or just use your own.
And when it says eg. 45 minutes and in the description stands with 1 minute post run adbmvice and cooling down. Is that 45 minutes running with the advice and cooling down after those 45 minutes or is it eg. 40 minutes running with 5 minutes cooling down?
45 minutes running then the chat when you can jog slowly or walk to cool down. You can always stop whenever you want or on the runs I've done it gives you the option to continue. Best way is to try one, you can stop it whenever you want, they are a bit twee as I said but I find them OK.
Hi Evy, I tried the NRC app yesterday on my first run and thought it was absolute pants! The guided run from what I can figure out, is basically a short run with a coach who comes over the top of your music to annoy you with unhelpful motivation whilst you struggle to breathe. I turned it off the last 5 minutes of the run. I couldn't see any warm up or cool down options for the run either
I suggested it Evy, you’ll have an idea as to which point your 5 min walk normally ends. So when you reach that you start your music playlist and press start on the run. If you choose a 20 minute run for example then it’s 20 mins running, however if you need to stop, you’ll here ‘workout paused’ until you resume it. At the end of the run you can continue if you feel you can go further by pressing the arrow ➡️ or to end the run press and hold the stop button ⏹. Choose a run you’ll feel comfortable with and try it. Lots of runners on here use it and enjoy it, I love it. Hope this helps.
Yes all the advice above. Just try listening to one while you are at home so you know what to expect when you’re running. They are just like a podcast. I really enjoy them. Yes Coach Bennett can be a bit annoying but they are company on a run and there’s some interesting info in in there too.
Hi there, yes NRC is very different to the C25k podcasts but I really like them. I don’t run with music so I’m just listening to the commentary. Having graduated from C25k I felt I needed something for timing and motivation and theres a bunch of 30 minute runs which work well for that. I really like the Headspace runs, there’s also an interesting one with Mo Farah (Go with Mo!) and I find the Trail Run one good when I’m running off road. There’s also a ‘first long run’ which is achievable at a manageable 35 mins. For all the runs if you want to keep going after the podcasts finish you press ‘play’ again and it will keep recording data and tell you when you’ve hit the next km etc. I like the stats it provides for the runs although sometimes the GPS doesn’t pick up quite right. Yes, it’s made for a US audience so some of it sounds a bit corny for Brit ears but all in all, for no cost I reckon it’s a win. Personal preference though - won’t suit everyone.
Just noticed though - doesn’t look like you’ve completed C25k yet so I’d save it for when you graduate. For getting to 30 mins solid running C25k is what you need 😁😁
I stopped with C25K because I can't run even 20 mins at one go. I am just going to keep winging it at 30 min with 2 walking breaks until my body thinks it can do more. I don't handle 'you have to' well so I go solo 😉
I use them and I find them really helpful. I like the motivational chat from Coach Bennett and it has helped me transition from C25K to longer runs. The interval training is particularly good.
I love them, but I don't use them that often, just when I need a bit of structure or guidance, or I've been getting sloppy with my form.
Yesterday I used the Cold Run and it had loads of good advice on how to deal with running in this weather. Coach Bennett can be a bit over the top for British ears, but where else would you get world class advice for free while you run?
I also like the interval runs. I can't remember what it's actually called but I got a 5k PB running two minutes fast, one minute slow.
Question to all: I used a guided run just now for 30 mins. But my phone battery drained from 88% to 2% on 30 mins! What is that?? Are there ways to avoid that happening? I use a Garmin watch, maybe I can turn of the GPS?
Yeah that happened to me. The GPS really drains the battery. Make sure you close all apps running in the background and download both the run and your music. That solved this problem for me.
I can't help you there, sorry. I use my Garmin watch to actually track my run. I can't use it for music because I have to pair my headphones to my phone for the Nike runs. Even with the guided run and music playing together, I don't drain that much battery from my phone.
I just use the QuickStart runs - set either time or distance and it will tell you your pace and timing as you complete each half km. I prefer my own music to the wittering of the coaches on their.
I use it along with the couch25k app - I’m mainly doing 20 min runs (Wk5R3) and now doing Wk6 again to build up time back to 30 mins (graduated in June but backslid on runs). Did Wk6R1 a couple of days ago and was running faster than before so pleased with that. Even with walking intervals, my pace was not far off my normal run pace.
Do what feels good for you. If you don’t like couch25k app, you may prefer the coaxing of NRC or prefer to go it alone.
