Evening running

I’ve been training for a charity run tomorrow, in order to fit my training in I have been running of an evening this week and I’ve realised it’s not my favourite time.

I normally run mid morning after walking the dog, it’s daylight, no frost and I have a light breakfast an hour before I run.

Yesterday I finished work early, I came home, prepared dinner then set out for a 5K at 5:30 pm. As I set off I was looking forward to the run to unwind from the day, it was cold out so I was happy to run to warm up.

The pavement was glistening from the get go, I hadn’t allowed for being icy but decided to take it easy and watch my footing.

I enjoyed the run, taking in the Christmas lights and was appropriately layered up.

Then after 3K I my lunch that I’d had 4-5hours earlier started to repeat on me. I thought I’d left enough time before running but I’m never having tuna mayo jacket again 🤢 I managed to run through stomach cramps and was cold to the bone when in.

Ive decided to stick up morning running for now, but I f do I’d feel suitably unwound by my evening run. I’ll maybe try again in the warmer weather.

How long do you evening runners allow after lunch before running? Are there set meals you stick to? I’m not ruling out evenings but need to learn what I can eat and when, in less icy evenings ❄️☃️🥶cheers

Well done.As stated in the guide to the plan, what suits one runner in terms of what and when to eat may not work for anyone else..........learn by trial and error..........you have started your blacklist.

I don't know if you ever get a copy of "Runners World" but in the January issue there's a really derailed article about the things to do / not to do regarding eating...... Apparently on longers runs pizza is permissable Kaboom 🍕+🏃‍♂️ gotta be a winner 🤗

I tried running in the evenings and found I couldn't get to sleep afterwards. I usually run at least two to three hours after a meal: before breakfast, before lunch or before dinner.

Thanks, I will try those timings. Interesting my first evening run about 4 hours before bed I found myself wide awake for about an hour but was tired, didn’t connect the two but maybe why 🤷🏻‍♀️ Trial and error I guess

Well done for getting out there Catho.

I’m not good at having eaten before a run either. Lunch-wise I guess I just avoid ‘heavy’ and try and think ‘fuel.’ If I’m feeling peckish close to take off I snack on oatcakes. Good carbs 👍🏼

I’ve noticed that milk (in cereal quantity) makes me feel really ill hours after I’ve eaten it so that’s out for me. I wonder if dairy is generally more difficult or takes longer for the body to process?

I like Iannoda’s idea of creating a blacklist ☺️ Good luck with the rest of your runs this week.

Thanks for the advice, yeah blacklist build up time. Cheers, set to run first 9K tomorrow, my first virtual 1hr (min) race for charity 😬 but I’m excited, feels like Christmas Eve and I’ve got my colleagues and family sponsoring me, thanks for the tips, happy running 🏃🏽‍♀️
