Week 1 Run 1!

So I finally got round to starting Couch to 5k! I have a lot of reasons that I’ve decided to start - mainly I want to get fitter, lose some weight and feel good! But a more specific reason I’ve decided to do this is that I also practice shotokan karate . I’m currently a brown belt and I’m at a point now where I feel like my level of fitness is holding me back so I’m hoping that this will help! I did my first run earlier and it was hard, I’ve never really ran before so I expected it would be. But I feel good about it nonetheless! And seeing everybody’s posts and how far people have come is making me feel very motivated and really happy that I started :) so thank you :) I’m also hoping that posting about my journey on here will further encourage me to stick at it! Wish me luck :)

Well done for starting!

That's the hard bit !

I used to do shotokan many many years ago but never got near brown 😂

I got out of the habit after breaking my little toe, I was doing a kick on someone during training and felt pain in my foot, looked down and my little toe was at 90 degrees to my foot ! Ouch ! 😖

That was the last time for me haha.

Anyway,

Remember to take the runs slowly, keep hydrated, take a rest day and do the dynamic warm ups before you run and the stretches afterwards .

Most of all , enjoy the program 😁👍

Ouch! That sounds awful! I’m not surprised you didn’t fancy it after that! 😂 You do have to be super careful with your toes when you kick. You can actually get foot guards to train in - they would definitely have saved your toe! Definitely invest if you ever feel like getting back into it!

But anyway! Thanks so much for the advice! I will definitely be keeping all those things in mind! 😊 watch this space! 😊

Good luck HexGirl, doing this will definitely help with your Shotokan Karate 🥋. Well done for getting out there and completing your first run, it is hard when you start...but as someone once said to me...if it was easy everyone would be doing it. Stick with it and my tip would be to concentrate on getting your breathing into a steady rhythm, nice deep breath in, then purse your lips slightly as you breathe out, the oxygen is your fuel and if your taking enough in, you won’t feel out of breath 👍🏃‍♀️

Thanks so much for the advice! Controlling my breathing was definitely something I found to be challenging on my first run so that’s definitely a tip I’ll use :)

You’re welcome, it really does make such a difference, it’s the most important thing I’ve learnt. Also don’t jog too quickly, you can easily finish with a flourish if you’ve got the energy at the end.....plus it’ll impress your neighbours if they see you running past their windows still full of energy 😉

Good luck - I’m pretty sure it will help with all of those things 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Been many years since I did Shotokan Karate - my parents always had a club or two when i was growing up.........great memories
