Hi I just did first run on week 4 but due to Peroneal Tendonitis I haven’t done anymore for the last week. Any advice as I really want to carry on but don’t want to do more damage.
Peroneal Tendonitis : Hi I just did first run on... - Couch to 5K
Peroneal Tendonitis
This article looks pretty soundly-based to me. foot-pain-explored.com/pero...
(I am a long-retired GP with experience in physical medicine who came back to pathetically slow running through C25K during the last year)
The old, old dilemma is how to balance rest for inflamed tendons with getting going again. ('...itis' just means 'inflammation of... whatever comes first - in this case either or both of the peroneal tendons running under the lateral malleolus of the ankle from their respective muscles higher up)
There are things about the way all these tendon soreness conditions behave which I don't think anyone really understands. But sometimes pushing through it seems to do more good than harm, and sometimes anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen do seem to help as well. I think they may reduce the swelling and tightness in the tendon sheath so that the tendon rubs less as it moves inside it. But if it doesn't help stop it, and don't go on using it for long anyway.
The good thing, and again I don't think we really understand the mechanism of why, is that these things (I used to say 'always'!) get better in the end. Even after it has grumbled on for months.
So don't despair. And good luck
Thankyou that was a really helpful article. I’m going to try resting it this week and then trying again with the running and taking the ibuprofen and see how it goes
