Achilles Tendonitis

I started couch to 5k to help with insomnia and reached week 8 two weeks ago. I have absolutely loved it and it was definitely helping. Unfortunately I got up the next day and could barely walk and have been like that since. The physio made the diagnosis and said it would take 8 to 10 weeks to recover providing I do the daily exercises. I am gutted and sleeping is now as bad as it was before I started. Am not sure I will be able to run again, would appreciate any advice please.

There have been runners in your situation who have gone on to run again, but follow the advice of your physio. If they are negative about future running, look for a specialist sports physio.

I ruptured my Achilles’ tendon whilst running 5 years ago and have started couch to 5k recently and am very cautious about running. Listen to the physio and do the exercises they will help and I’m sure you will be able to run again. Don’t lose faith !!

I really hope so, it is hard to be optimistic when one ankle is so swollen it’s twice the size of the other one still after 2 weeks. I will try and be patient!

I had problems with my Achilles and both my knees a few years ago. I switched to Nordic Walking and slowly things improved. I am on W6 and am now a stretching convert. I do a much longer warm up walk and cool down and stretch for longer than I run at the moment. It has helped hugely and none of the old problems have returned. I take it more slowly as I am looking at 60 this year and try to be patient with myself. Don’t despair, do what you need to do and find alternative ways to keep active, your physio should be able to advise you. Good luck.

Thank you for your replies. I was doing a lot of stretching before and after each run. I think I must have very weak tendons but didn’t realise until now. I may try swimming when the swelling has gone down.
