I graduated C25k a week or so back and have been doing 30 mins every other day more or less. Today though, it didn't go as planned. I set off on my regular route, with the aim of doing a 30 min run, in direct sun at 10am with the temperature already at 28 degrees. Setting out I was hearing a little voice saying, 'hmm, yeah, you know, I'm really not too sure this is going to work..!'
What happened was that 15 mins in I stopped, absolutely flattened by the heat and the sudden seeming scarcity of anything to breath. That's the first time I've had the experience of not being able to complete a run I set out to do during this whole C25k programme. An hour later, I'm in my dim kitchen POURING sweat still and thinking 'you know, maybe next time, I'll pay a bit more attention to internal voices..?'
But its tricky, though. As CJ would say,' I didn't get where I am today by listening to querulous, nay-saying internal voices!' Many times I set out on C25k runs thinking I wasn't sure I could do them. But I guess it's just easy to underestimate the effect that heat and blazing sun can have on an overweight 55-year old bloke.
(PS: I noticed that the sweat I've been pouring out smells markedly of ammonia - not something I've ever experienced before and it lead me to a bit of searching on t'internet. Turns out that this happens if you do heavy exercise without enough carbs having gone in the tank recently. It made me remember that I'd been neglecting carbs a little and eating more protein and salads recently - and also that I did this morning's run after not eating anything for eleven hours.)
