Newbie saying hi!

Hi everyone, I’ve just joined this forum.

Last Friday I completed W3D3, but over the weekend I’ve had a really sore knee and ankle on the right. Got up and ready to start week four today but within two mins of the warm up walk I had to turn back :(

Anyone else experience knee and ankle pain in the early weeks? I’m hoping that a rest day today and some nurofen will do the trick and I’ll be able to start week 4 properly tomorrow.

Hi Corrie85 , sorry to hear that you're dealing with ankle and knee pain.

Did you feel this pain gradually building through week 3, or did it seem to appear after that last run of week 3?

Also, do you notice any differences you have between your left and right sides? That may be related to having a stronger side, favouring one side, or maybe a previous injury on one side. There may also be a visual difference, say if you had a flat foot on one side.

Look forward to hearing from you :-)

Hi, thanks for your reply 😊

I did feel it gradually begin towards the end of last week but weirdly I was still able to complete the week, and the pain seems to have gotten worse over the weekend when I’ve had two rest days.

I am a bit uneven; I had scoliosis as a kid which I had corrective surgery for but I’m definitely not symmetrical and so I wonder if I’m running in a way that bears more weight on my right side 🧐

It seems strange that the pain has gotten worse during the rest days. I think it's probably some inflammation protecting the affected area. So something could have occurred when you first noticed the pain, and then your body has slowly been working to protect that area of pain since.

It is possible that there is an imbalance, definitely. The vast majority of us do have imbalances between our left and right sides, but usually not such a difference that leads to pain and/or injury.

Try a single leg balance test. Stand on one leg for as long as possible without touching the other foot down. If you reach 60 seconds, this is great. If you find a big difference between the two sides, it may highlight an imbalance. Let me know how you get on! :-)

So I did the balance test and I could teach 60 seconds easily on each foot. So no big difference there.

Due to the scoliosis I do have a height difference in my shoulders and hips and so maybe it’s the way the weight is being distributed as I run. I found it bizarre how it seemed to worsen on the rest days but as you say maybe it’s inflammation. There certainly feels like a point under my knee cap and towards the inside of my leg that feels a little inflamed, and with my ankle it’s a pain just near the ankle “knuckle” (I don’t know what that part is actually called 😂) thanks for your advice etc. I’ve really missed not getting out for my run today so hoping for tomorrow 🤞🤞

Great that you completed the balance test, that's good!

I can't diagnose anything but pain under the kneecap could be related to the patellar tendon. Keep me updated on how it feels :-)
