Ah well playmates. My dreaded fear came about.

18 mins into the run, I felt great. Then, a sharp pain up my right calf. I’d have carried on, but it was too painful. If not for that I’m sure I could have run on beyond the 20 minutes. Not that I would have. Sticking to the plan. Cannot even do the cool down walk properly. Maybe it was caused by a lack of stretches?? I’ll try again on Sunday morning. Hope I’ve recovered by then.

Hope everyone is well. Stay safe.

You did absolutely the right thing by stopping! And 18 minutes is amazing! Let your body recover and next time you will nail it!! ☺️

Oh, Fred, that's a shame, but you did the right thing. Hope all ok for Sunday 🤞

Love your running buddies 😀

Hey NikonikoFred ,

Sorry to hear about your calf injury.

Take a few days rest, see how it feels. Try to keep it moving by walking. Stretching often may exacerbate the issue whilst it's still painful, although this would provide a feeling of temporary pain relief.

As for the future, I recommend doing some extra warm-up exercises to prepare the calves before a run. Doing a set of 6-8 reps on each leg of these eccentric calf raises help to prepare and strenghten the calves and achilles for the load of running:

I'd also recommend doing some really gentle hops in a warm-up, such as these bunny hops:

But for now, take it easy. See how the pain changes. Do what you need to do to manage the pain. Be cautious on returning to running.

Take care of yourself :-)

Thanks mate. I’ll have a look at those links. I think you’re right about not having done enough stretches. And I’m not at all perturbed about this. A little disappointed perhaps, but hey, it’s not the end of the world, yet lol.

That is such a shame that you had to give up your 20 minutes run at only two minutes to go, but you did do the correct thing on stopping, give yourself a few extra days off running, drink plenty of water the day before you run again and take run 3 of week 5 a little slower than you did today.

Not what you're looking for?
