Distance?

How are people tracking their run distance? When I’m doing my runs I have the five minutes warmup and 5 mins cool down so that’s counted into my distance in my apps (Strava, Map my run) etc...how do the rest of you track the run distance then??

Hi, I normally do the same as you. Since using c25k app I only really use mapmyrun so I can look at my average km times.

I use map my run but I start it about 30 seconds before the warm up walk ends ( just enough time to start it and put my phone away before I start running) then I stop it as soon as the cool down starts so that it just shows my running time/distance give or take a few seconds

Hi there I use run keeper but I only now track when I start the run and stop once I start the cool down. I used to use it for the whole thing but I wasn’t sure that’s what you’re supposed to do?

Hi. I did similar to others. When I was in walk and run weeks I did whole thing. Then when hit longer runs with walk at beginning and end I just did run recording.

It’s nice to know distances and pace but I don’t really take that much notice as it’s the time I can keep going for that I’m excited by.

Main thing is that we do what makes us feel good. 😀

I do the same as you, knowing that I have the 10 minutes walking making up part of my distance. I just about do my 5k with that and my wk9 runs. At some point I will just record actual runs but probably when I am nearly running 5k, I will stretch my running time out a bit!!

I used to start my tracker as the run started... though there was some faffage then getting the phone put away. It doesn’t really matter what you track... all of it is awesomeness if you ask me.

I start recording at start of my run, I have Apple Watch so can do it quickly. I am on all run weeks now and I like to see what my cadence and average heart rates are for the run without the warmups and cool down walks diluting the figures.

I use my polar watch, and strava

I use Strava for the whole thing and then mapmyrun for the run section - that way I can see both my total distance and my pace over the running section. Trying not to be too obsessive about stats but it is nice to see progress!

Hi I have discovered Strava and press start as I leave the door and press finish when I return and count it all in my run. Cheating probably but works for me. 😳

I do the same. I use Map my Walk ( guess I should upgrade to Map My Run) and set it off as I leave the house. Most times I remember to stop it as I get home, although I have been known to forget until half way through my post run bath! Doesnt upset my distance, but boy! does that mess with my time 😀

I think the key is to be consistant, whichever way you do it. I tend to record from the moment I set out until finish the cool down, as it is all moving distance, and it is always a pfaff to put my phone away (I use an armband). For me the time spent is more important than pace. That said, Strava works out pace anyway, so knows when you have gone faster.

I use map my run to get the distance every now and then or if I go a different route. I don’t use it all the time as it’s too much faffing then.

I use Strava and get it all set up before warm up but just press start when I start running and stop when I finish. Warm up and warm down dilute the stats ... and I love the stats ... like to know when I’ve done a PB 🙂

Also means that I really enjoy the warm down, look at the scenery, change to slower music, feel proud of myself 😊

I’ve been doing the same as you, only just completed week 2, but I start as I leave and drop at end of the cool down. As long as you do the same thing each time you can compare.

When I was doing the C25K plan I tracked all of it.

Now I just track my runs.

I start tracking when I start running, and leave the walking out

Mapmyrun also. I don't track myself live but create the route afterwards.

I do the same as Tipee, I get the Strava app ready on my phone screen before I leave the house then at 4.30min I quickly start it and put my phone away ready to start my run. The same when I stop, as soon as I can I stop the Strava app and record the run whilst I am on my cool down walk.

I don't start the watch until I start the run. And turn it off at the end of the run. Don't count the warm up or cool down.

I turn strava on when I start running and remember to turn it off when I’ve finished - it’s a bit fiddly but if you forget you can edit on strava (I didn’t know until someone told me)... but be careful .. I was edit happy and took too much off one of my runs 🙈🤣

I have a Garmin watch which records my different activities. I do have to remember to save the warm up walk before I start running though. That way distance and speed for the run are kept separate.

hi! I use Strava too and I also count my warm up and cool down as well 😂 even if you’re only walking your still covering distance 👍🏻

It all depends upon your goal.

My short-term goal, which encompasses up to one year currently, is to increase the number of minutes running. So those are the only minutes I track.

I don’t have a long-term goal currently, other than to keep running.

However, my long-term goal used to be to move 5 miles a day. That seems to be an amount that’s recommended i.e. 10,000 steps, as well as the world-wide average among isolated societies that don’t have anything with the wheel. I.e. hunter gatherers. (Men) (For women, 3 miles)

When this becomes a goal once again, I will track total miles moved as well.

Come to think of it, I need to track total miles moved anyway right now, so that I’ll know when to replace my trainers (shoes) .

I think mine are rated at like 400 or 500 miles. I need to double check that of course

As a practical matter, currently running number is certain number of minutes every other day because it fits my schedule and lifestyle. And put this in a spreadsheet. But as I said, I need to start tracking miles.

Thank you for posting this! I've been wondering the same thing. I am on week 7, completed run 2 this morning. I was moving for 5.21 km from start to finish but I'm intrigued to know how far I was actually running. I also get annoyed seeing the walking pace in the splits. Maybe I'll do as others suggested from Friday and just plot my runs.

I didn't know you could edit your strava route, thanks for that tip. I'll see if I can figure that out!

I’m so slow that it doesn’t really matter- doubt I’ll ever do 5k in 30 mins! I’ve started using MapMyWalk for the whole thing, just to get an idea of distance. First run of week 9 I did a bit over 3kms running. So sloooow!!!

PurplePanda42 profile image
PurplePanda42Graduate in reply toPhoebeBianca

I've just done week 8 run 1 - and feel so slow - but I have google fit on my phone and that says I ran 2.5miles/ 4k in the 28 minutes of running... so I think I would manage 5k in about 35 minutes (not that I could manage that at the moment though but maybe in a month if I keep increasing a few minutes every week).

Keep going!!

I mapped the who thing in the earlier weeks, just to see what I was covering and then later down the line when it was just solid runs I started my watch when the run starts.

PurplePanda42 profile image
PurplePanda42Graduate

I have google fit - since starting the longer runs it has noticed (must be doing something right!) - so it automatically records it as a 5 min walk, then a 28 min run (I'm on week 8), then a 5 minute run. It doesn't do all the fancy stuff but shows distance and pace, and you don't have to start or stop it! And it's free!!

Start tracking when your start running and stop when you stop. Don’t include walking.

In the early days I recorded everything on Strava, as the running increased (from around week5) I started only recording the bit between the warm up/cool down walks.

I now use a Fitbit charge 4 which has gps on it, I set it up during the warm up (so it can be finding satellites) so it’s just a screen tap to start it recording at the end of the walk.
