How does my iPod measure distance?

Do any of you know how my iPod measures distance? My last two runs have been exactly the same distance. I ran one clockwise and the second anticlockwise. Run one was 4.8k and run two was 4.6k I know that is only 200m and may be an acceptable margin for error but I'm curious! Any thoughts?

By GPS...I would say that the satellite alignment was particularly bad on one of those days!

Hi there. I was getting weird readings on my iPhone which indeed uses GPS to measure the distance. Now I wait will I am outside and walk until I get a very good signal until I turn on the app ("Good" on Runkeeper as opposed to "Fair", but you could check the bars in the signal strength display). Tall buildings and weather can affect the signal and I have identified that I get a good strength about 20 metres from my home once I turn onto the main street. This seems to have fixed the problem and I get consistent readings now. My husband uses a Garmin watch which are reputedly the most accurate, but I am happy with my iPhone now so I can use the Runkeeper ap. Good luck with your running

Sorry, I have no idea. I will ask him and get back to you. He also has to wait a bit until he gets a good signal before he clicks start.

iPod doesn't have GPS like the iPhone. It can only estimate your distance via the nike+ foot sensor or by using the inbuilt accelerometer.

Thanks IndieWaif, that could explain it there is a steep incline on my route so one time uphill very slowly, next time downhill a little quicker!
