Back to the start?

Hi All, after an extremely long hiatus through injury and a diagnosis of (very early) onset osteoporosis arthritis I’m thinking of starting up my running again, well to at least give it a good try. I had in fact graduated but given the long break of over a year should I start right at the beginning of the programme? Should I even attempt it whilst the weather is so warm (I do suffer a bit in the heat)? And is it even sensible as there are some many other runners and cyclists milling around because of Coronavirus that I clearly can’t avoid? What do you think?

Do it!!! Welcome back!!! Yes, I am still here:)

Start at the beginning, and if you are able , do try and get out early morning.. I run before 6.30... Loads of us have done the whole thing again and it is great....no pressure, you know what is coming and you know you will do it.

Take is.... you'v guessed it :) slow and steady... make sure you do those post run stretches too ( loads of posts on the strength and flex forum to help with those, and rest day exercise too).

The runs are terrific for letting the Covid stress go... choose your route carefully, keep posting and enjoy!

I started back at the beginning (again) after being on the IC for an extended period too, also started doing a little cycling too, I enjoy them both but running is still the no. 1 for me.

Just give it a go, slow and steady as always, there are plenty of people out jogging, etc but don't let that put you off just be sensible and if you end up running alongside someone you don't know, just give them a wide berth and carry on.

Did you find it easier second time around?

It is easier from the point that you know what is coming, even though you can read what each run is, and you know there is nothing in there that you know you haven't done before so no hang-ups about week 5 run 3 or any of the longer runs.

I'm on my 3rd run through with week 5 run 3 tomorrow, I know I've done it twice before and used the 20 minute podcast for the odd shorter faster run so I don't have my head telling me I can't do it.

Hi again AngryFlower, I'm having a long spell on the IC too, and will be starting back at the beginning again, with the knowledge that I can do it!

Good luck to you, take it steady and maybe add in something extra like yoga, Pilates, cycling or walking on your non running days. 🌻xxx

Good luck with your ribs too. Fortunately I’ve kept up my strength training throughout the injury period although I’ve had to improvise during lockdown Plus I discovered a ready good hip mobility routine which should make things easier when I start again. As you say, at least we know we can do it now!
