Annoyed - Injured already?

Hi All

Just limped home from W2R3

Completed 4 running sections but had to stop due to pain in my left calf or just below it. So annoyed!!

When I started today’s run and even thinking back to the last couple of runs I have felt pain in my left calf but thought it was just because I wasn’t used to running let alone this much running over a few days.

But today it forced me to stop and I was really p****d off with myself.

I’m not stretching before hand

I’m probably not drinking enough water. - that changes now.

Do I need to stretch at these early stages - I didn’t thibk I needed to.

How long do I rest before carrying on? Ie can I try the run again tomorrow?

Don’t want to do any damage but also don’t want to stop and loose the momentum I’ve got

M

That is tough.

The guide to the plan has advice on dealing with injury. Only you can tell when you are ready to run again, but give it a few days minimum........it may take longer.

Stretching immediately after every run, nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/h... while muscles are still warm and supple, pulls out contractions, avoiding carrying tensions into the next run and also improves recovery by improving blood flow, as recommended in the guide to the plan.

After seven years of running I still stretch after every run.

This is more important than pre run stretching in my opinion, as long as you warm up adequately.

Rest up and reread the guide........the advice might sink in now that you know what it is referring to.

Take care.

Thanks for the tips.

I’m just annoyed at myself more than anything.

Calf is aching a lot, walking up stairs is very painful. Lots of rest and water from what I can gather.

Do NOT run tomorrow.

Don't try again until Tuesday at the earliest.

Look up calf raises and also eccentric heel drops on YouTube and do some. And do them slowly.

As IT's post, stretch post-run.

Pre-run, the brisk walk is as much as you need to do.

Thanks John

Going to check out some YouTube videos in the morning.

Ibuleve and Ralgex have been rubbed in.

I just don’t want to lose the momentum - but I am listening to everyone when they are saying rest

One question - how do you know when you are ready to run again?

Excellent question.

Aside from the specific exercises, do simple stretches every say and also some brisk walking to see how it feels.

Also... if you can hop 50 times on the affected leg without any issue, you're normally considered good to go.

I assume you have decent running shoes?

It's also a bit suck-it-and-see. You'll get to a point where you think it's ok, and go and test it. Very much a learning curve. Welcome to running.

I think ...take two paracetamol before you run....I'd ignore that..maybe it's just your legs being tested..🤷‍♀️

The poor guy is limping home and you're suggesting he ignores it? Seriously?

I'm no expert that's why I started C25K. I was just offering the same advice I gave myself when I was struggling. I wasn't setting out to upset anyone.

Hi, no offence taken.

This is a forum for help and advice. I’m just at the start of my journey really and wanting to keep going but know now that I’ll have to stop for at least a few days.

Sorry to hear that. I had a calf injury week 4 - took two weeks before I could run again - of course injuries wont necessarily be the same and everyone is different when it comes to recovery times but even if you do have to take time out- you will get there. Please don’t give up. I increased my warm up walk from 5 mins to 10 mins, I bought a foam roller and I started drinking a lot more water every day. I’ve not had any problems since 🤞🏻

I’m definitely going to increase my water intake on a daily basis.

Foam roller, not got one yet. May look into it
