Feeling ill after 1st "long" run?

Hi there!

I was so proud to have been able to complete the 20min of week 5 yesterday, but the aftermath has been pretty horrific. I am assuming it's dehydration (which is weird in itself as I am a big water drinker), or just exhaustion but would love some thoughts?

After coming back for the run I went to have a warmish bath with Epsom salts, and had some lunch about 1h after the run.

About 2h after I came back I started shivering and being sore all over (no fever). Took about 1h to feel human again and about 2h to get back to normal. I took some paracetamol, ibuprofen and drank about 1l of water with some added electrolytes.

And the same happened overnight.

I feel absolutely fine this morning, not even that sore?

Anyone experienced that before?

Anything I can do to avoid this?

Note: Had some high fibre cereal at 7am, oatcakes at 11 and ran at 13. Had drank at least 1.5l at that point too!

Hmmmm. Nothing like this has ever happened to me. I don't think that was the run that did it. How are you feeling now? I would take an extra rest day if I were you and make sure you've totally recovered from whatever it was.

Maybe one of the more experienced runners can chip in like Oldfloss or IannodaTruffe . In the mean time dont let this turn into running gremlins but also make sure feel totally well before running again.

But congrats on that run!!

Yeah I feel absolutely fine now!

I will probably wait till Wednesday for the next run.

Was just really weird.

Feeling cold after a run is a fairly common symptom for certain runners and if you do a search you will find discussions about it on various running forums. The most likely cause seems to be low blood sugar.

I have never heard of the soreness, nor the recurrence being associated with it though.

In respect of hydration, you need to drink a minimum of 2.5 -3 litres per day (more when it is hot) each and every day, whether you are running or not as explained in this post about the crucial nature of good regular hydration healthunlocked.com/couchto5... and as mentioned in the guide to the plan.

It may of course have nothing to do with your running at all.

I've ended up feeling off on and off for a few days now, so definitely moving towards the "non running" related. Which is a relief!

How awful. I haven't suffered like you but I do occasionally go cold about an hour and half after I get home, my body goes from being very warm to being very chilled. Your pre run meals sounded a bit dry (cereal and oatcakes). I start with a small bowl of muesli with fresh fruit and yoghurt, drink a glass of water and go out an hour after the light breakfast. When I come back I drink water and have a piece of fruit or fruit juice. This may help with low blood sugar that has been suggested by IannodaTruffe. I've been trying to follow his advice on hydration but struggle to reach the recommended levels.

Thanks Newbie59 - I'll definitely try and adjust my food intake beforehand.

I have been feeling off for a few days no, so actually gearing towards non running related!
