Tunes for motivation

I’m now in week 8, and one thing that has really helped me get this far is listening to music, especially Johnny Marr, the Bluetones, Depeche, Wire. What bands/artists inspire you to keep those legs moving?

Yes, I definitely think it helps. So far I have managed to keep going - w8r1 was a struggle due to yesterday’s high wind, however I got to the end without stopping. Running again tomorrow

I tend to listen to dance music as I find the upbeat nature helpful 😊

I listen to classic rock, I find AC/DC is usually a good beat to run to but mostly have a various soundtrack going 😊

Yep, they’re good. Depends on your mood doesn’t it?

Yes, I have a Born to run playlist at 150bpm which I tend to listen to as it has a good variety of the rock music I like 😊

I’ll have a look for that one then

Hi PurpleCat. How's it going? I've just done R1 W8. Was difficult with the strong wind, but pleased with myself for getting it there. Well have completed this programme soon!

I know, the wind’s even worse today! I did my w8r1 yesterday morning. Was expecting to do a sprint for the last minute - couldn’t manage to speed up at half way point. But on the whole I’m pleased with my progress - how about you?

Go59 profile image
Go59Graduate in reply to PurpleCat87

No sprinting for me I'm afraid. I have a short but steep hill at the end of my route. I have to conserve my energy to be able to get up it! I am pleased with my progress though, didn't think on W1 R1 that I'd actually make it to this point! Keep going. We'll be graduating very soon 😊

Yep, should be 1st June for me

Go59 profile image

I could also be 1st June, I have to fit the runs in around work, but if not it will definitely be the first week of June. Eeek!

Great stuff, glad we will finish around the same time. Weather is looking better for tomorrow so will be out first thing

I have run without music before, but i much prefer with....

I've added to it a few time since then, but you'll find my early running players below:

Always looking to see what other people run to so I can more :-)

Love it! Some good ones there, especially Bruce, TFF, Doobies, The Verve. Haven't heard Kula Shaker in a while. I used to run without music a while ago, but it was much harder!

I have to confess I run in the countryside with classic fm 😂

PurpleCat87 profile image
PurpleCat87Graduate in reply to Go59

Nothing wrong with that! I am quite partial to some classical stuff

PurpleCat87 profile image
PurpleCat87Graduate

Yes, it can make such a difference - a few years ago I used to run without music, now I really wouldn’t want to

The idea is to listen to your own favourite music, the stuff that you enjoy at home. It's pointless to listen to other people's choices unless you're heavily into German industrial metal, for example, or early Miles Davies or whatever. Bad music, as in music that you dislike, is guaranteed to ruin your entire run.

I agree, just interested to hear what others listen to. I have quite varied taste!

SweatyHettie profile image

My running playlist is totally varied- it has some absolute bangers like Mr Brightside and some absolute cheese like You Can’t Stop the Beat with a bit of Chase & Status, Sigala and Calvin Harris thrown in for good measure. And anything featuring Nile Rogers. My musical taste is eclectic to say the list. You’ll be likely to find me at a classical concert one day, Paul Weller the next, Elton John, followed by Take That, The Killers and Ed Sheeran. Well not now obviously but in normal circumstances 😜

I would never have graduated without my music 🎧

Good to have open ears Hettie - there is so much great music of all genres to enjoy. I still enjoy hearing new stuff for that reason. It will be fantastic when we can go to gigs and festivals again! Hopefully soon.

SweatyHettie profile image

Absolutely agree. Am currently playing Harry Styles’ new stuff quite a lot. My son is a musician so music is a big part of life in the Hettie house😛

PurpleCat87 profile image
PurpleCat87Graduate in reply to SweatyHettie

I don’t mind Harry - he can sing. He’s done better stuff since he left 1D

SweatyHettie profile image
SweatyHettieGraduate in reply to PurpleCat87

Yeah I was never a big 1D fan but his music seems to have matured quite nicely ( like a good cheese!)

PurpleCat87 profile image
PurpleCat87Graduate in reply to SweatyHettie

He’s gone up in my estimation too. Quite a feat, since he did do that awful cover of Teenage Kicks with 1D!

In fairness I think all of them are better solo- maybe a case of the whole wasn’t as great at the sum of its parts.

I listen to the WWE Anthology, which is basically the themes that the WWE Wrestlers enter the ring to, I’m not a fan of WWE, but the entrance music is great and perfect to run too. Also added to the mix is the theme from Superman Man of Steel and The Avengers movie, as I’m just a big kid at heart and love DC / Marvel, works for me though.
