Do shoes make a difference?

Hi, I’ve just started Cto5K and I only have a cheap pair of trainers that I bought in Sainsbury’s. I can afford more expensive trainers, but I’m reluctant to buy them in case this running thing turns out to be a fad of mine. Unfortunately, I am someone who starts new hobbies or activities and then I don’t continue with them, 80% of the time. I don’t want to buy new running shoes only to find I no longer use run in a few months time. However, what I’d like to know is whether I will be causing damage to my joints or leaving myself more prone to injury if I run in £5 trainers

Welcome to the forum and well done on getting started.

This guide to the plan is essential reading healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

and includes a link to a post about shoes.

Your cheap shoes may be perfectly adequate and only time will tell, but they are unlikely to give the support that a proper running shoe will give.

I know it is early days, but if you stick with it then your footwear is the best investment you can make in your fitness and much cheaper than a physio.

Enjoy your journey.

Thank you for the link to the guide which was very helpful as it had a section on shoes . I should have read that to start with.
