Cows, kissing gates ... and my first 5K

I've managed to keep to my plan for this week and today was my long slow run, which goes through a couple of well walked fields. There were young cattle in one of the fields which had the advantage of keeping the dog walkers out so fewer to dodge around. (It's amazing how many people are out walking during the week now, normally I would only see one or two people on the entire route). This route entails a few kissing gates which means I have to slow down to navigate the gates and a chance to get my breath a bit! I caught the wire of my headphone on one of the gates which pulled it out of my ear (I only use one, so I can hear things around me) and stopped the music on my phone, so I had to replug my ear and extricate my phone from my leg pocket to re-start my music while still running! My plan was 35 minutes, but with 5k in sight I continued and completed my first 5km in 35.56 - well pleased with myself. Now roll on my birthday and wireless, bone conducting headphones.

The good news is that when parkrun restarts you will be able to astonish yourself with your true speed without gates, as I found out soon after I started healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

****ing gates are a secret training weapon........don't tell anyone else.

I love that post and the ****gates, but I don't mind them too much as they give me an excuse to walk a few strides!

Congratulations on completing your first 5k, very good time, if you run at a parkrun when they return you could get a sub 35 minute 5K.

Thanks, yes I'm looking forward to that now and I'm sure by the time they restart I will feel more confident that I can complete the course, running all the way.

That is an excellent time for a first 5k, especially given the "distractions" so you should be extremely chuffed with yourself. Well done.
