Does anyone else feel a bit depressed when the tv or radio is on, or when you pick up a newspaper? I'm not particularly worried about catching coronavirus, but the media are putting such a negative story across.
I didn't feel like going for a run this morning, but it was a lovely, day and I knew I would feel better both mentally and physically if I got out there.
So here's my advice, keep on running, and by doing so we're strengthening our lungs and making ourslelves invincible.
Did I mention, I'm not a doctor though 😘

I agree with you Gillian, but you just can't ignore what could become quite a series situation in a few weeks or months time, all sporting events could be cancelled including the big spring running events, London Marathon could be one of them, I hope not as so many people have trained for it, it's still too early to say how many events are going to be cancelled, hopefully things will change and nothing is cancelled, let's hope so.
It would be a terrible shame if these events get cancelled, I personally am not up to the standard of marathons or half marathons, but I hope those who have trained so hard keep up their fitness levels and get to partake at a later date.
Our RD was saying today that if gatherings of over 500 people are banned then all parkruns will be canceled. There are some parkruns that have over 1000 participants, so they would be the first to go. However even the smaller ones (we had less than 100 in dire weather last week, 107 in decent weather this week) will have to stop as if they go ahead they'll get the extra runners from the canceled events and be over the limit as well (not to mention that if 500 people turned up at our event we wouldn't have the tokens to give out).
Ditto! Our son's is 2 weeks today and our daughter and boyfriend are coming, separate routes, from NZ. Other son is best man, holding his breath with doctor wife, who nearly got quarantined with the family last week. Tears! Virus turned out to be a different one, so still off the hook! Counting the days. Bet you are too! All the best. We stand together!
Best wishes to you all. It's such a shame that what should be a happy time has turned out to be so stressful. One of our son's partner's bridesmaids works on a cruise ship. 😕
Sounds simple, but not practised by many. Yesterday I was sadly not surprised to see people using the toilets in my local supermarket and leaving without handwashing.
Someone pushing a shopping trolley and happily chomping on a pasty!.
Until we get the basics sorted out this remains a major problem.
I work in an isolation area, and tell the students the easiest way to get it second nature is to imagine everything that you touch is covered in poo! now would you carry on, or would you wash your hands?
Hey Jell6, I might spread that advice around my workplace! Ive been told in the past that a few germs wont do me any harm as some people think my handwashing is a little overzealous. Funny how no one has mentioned it lately tho🤫
Keep up the good work, looks like you're going to have a hectic schedule x
We were nattering before the yoga class the other day, one of the others mentioned that the instances of 'normal' winter virus cases in the Far East are much lower than recent winters, mainly because everyone is being scared into proper hygiene by coronavirus.
Coronavirus is now in my home city, and it is easier to find a seat in the cafe! Estonians avoid each other like the plague (!) however, so it shouldn't spread so easily, and I have got plenty of nice oil tar Russian soap.
To answer your opening question, yes. Newspapers, tv etc. are depressing, even without the C word. The media has to be filled up, all the time. But it's terribly debilitating to hear it and read it, I guess good news just isn't so interesting. I am trying hard not to follow the Guardian so much, especially in the early morning when I really need a message of hope.
I could not agree more! Some of the media headlines have been horrific and scaring people is not the way to deal with this - I look at the WHO website for information - and, although I have always washed my hands, I am doing so before I leave the house and first thing when I return and using hand gel after using shopping trollies etc - small steps. Exercise boost the immune system and strengthens all your body/organs so keep running/exercising!!
Well said fluffiness! My local radio station is the only media that does not seem to be promoting panic. Will take a look at WHO website if I need updates from now. Wishing you good mental and physical health 🤗🏃♀️
I think it is very important now to try to stay fit and positive 😊I’m trying to get in the habit of washing my hands the moment I get in.
Yes Gilliano666 I feel the same, I feel the vulnerability of our global technological world more than I ever have. The images of masked people infecting the streets is quite scary. My son’s work may be badly affected, he is freelance & his career only just taking off after years of hard work. A lot of his work comes from the world of sport! I’m awaiting hospital treatment and worried if it will be delayed.
Unfortunately as others have said here many people will just not cooperate, they probably feel it won’t affect them.
What can we do? Keep calm and run I think, enjoy and care for our planet and each other as much as we can. Be kind, even to those that don’t wash their hands 🥰
Hi jorge, the ramifications are far more widespread than getting what could be a very mild illness to a severe case. I hope your son's career isnt damaged long term.
I agree, be calm and run, be kind, don't panic buy and of course keep our hands clean! X
I am not worried about it, but I think we have a responsibility to those who could be vulnerable to take precautions. Most of it is common sense but people don’t do the basics unfortunately. (Humans can be a dirty bunch) I work for one of the British Olympic teams and it’s impacting us as events running up to the games are being cancelled as countries try to protect their athletes and stop cross contamination of spectators. Personally I was going to Switzerland for the worlds ice hockey in May and I think they will cancel that. All those people from all over the world sitting together could be a cooking pot. Roll on summer, let’s make it a hot one as they are saying that will kill it 🌞🌞🌞
I think if everyone ensures they stick to strict hygiene routines regarding washing hands and disposing of tissues etc and putting your hand over your mouth when you cough 😷 I think things will be ok. Really we shouldn’t need posters for this but some people really are awful. I have been at sporting events where people from other counties have openly coughed over me, and spat on the floor like it was nothing. Manners and good hygiene!!!!
Mr Rfc and I are keeping up with our outdoor exercise and good home cooked food loaded with natural Vits and minerals. I have stopped going to the indoor gym because of the lack of other people’s hygiene. We have to take it seriously as MrRfc is on immunosuppressants due to having a Kidney Transplant and if he gets it bad it is a big thing as he has to come of the tablets that keep his body from rejecting the kidney to fight the infection. So would be in danger of losing the transplant. So I’m activating my mini home gym again and as always washing our hands. But saying all that we are fit and healthy and sensible so hopefully we will be fine 😀 xxx
That seems sensible Rfc, the hardest thing to do is stop touching your face until you can wash your hands, these are such subconscious movements that they are hard to control. I hope you and Mr Rfc remain well😘
Thank you so much. 😘. I find stair banisters the worst. I’m constantly telling myself off for that one. It’s not even that I need the stability, just habit 😂.
I agree the headlines are depressing and there is a lot of fear mongering going on. So many peoples' jobs/companies are and will be affected by this with all the cancellations etc. We can only do our little bit by good hygiene, keeping healthy and fit and not paying much attention to the press 🙂
Ahh, you see, for the past few years, when the news has got too much, because by gum with Brexit, Trump, and politics we've been through the wringer recently, when it's got too much, I've switched off or over to another channel, and I stopped buying newspapers a long time ago. I find watching reruns of Hart to Hart or Murder She Wrote far better for my mental health than the morning news- then I go for a run. (Think I started this policy in 2018 which was when I started C25k, so they must be related.)
Yes, this is a little facetious, but the main stream media will get bored soon and return to celeb bashing and outrage over vegan sausage rolls.
I have a daughter who suffers from chronic asthma and a husband in an at risk group, so I'm taking it seriously, but there's always the danger that an over saturation of news leaves you feeling apathetic about it. Boning up on the facts rather than the newspaper headlines is essential, so the WHO or government websites are what I'm reading at the moment.
Dear friends, here in Italy we have been living this anxious situation for two weeks already and our numbers, as you know, are still growing despite the severe measures taken...The aim of all these measures are obviously to slow the expansion of the epidemic and not send our NHS into a deep and definitive crisis...a big big problem indeed!
What could I add? A lot of people here go on running (or jogging/walking) regularly because this is one of the simple and lovely thing that you can do, and we try to be resilient, to trust the experts and to mantain a positive attutire.
Aww sending my love and best wishes to all those affected in Italy. Agree completely, keep running, look after ourselves and each other as best we can. Stay well and positive 😘
Hi crolla, well said, and good on you for avoiding the media! I will also watch Hart to Hart rather than the latest documentary, and am listening to podcasts instead of talk radio shows. I do hope your more vulnerable family members stay well. Mu mum is 91 with underlying health conditions and I worry about her, and not so much about myslef x
Doctors are not the repository of all wisdom! The best you can do is, as you say, stay fit and take sensible precautions.
I have a friend who is 83, asthmatic, and has slow prostate cancer. He asked me if I thought he should play golf this week. I said 'keeping fit is the best defence, but avoid kissing anyone'.
At Keswick Parkrun this morning we were told not to pass our tokens (and barcodes) to the scanners, but hold them up to be scanned, and then drop them in a bucket. Sensible, proportional, easy and I have no doubt effective once the bucket is disinfected.
Every one of us who can remain calm and sensibly carry on is helping defeat this.
Wise words. I intend to look after myself, and that includes a little run 3 times per week. Not just for the sake of coronavirus, but all the other viruses and illnesses we open to.
Coz if they're stuck indoors for 2 weeks of quarantine they'll not be able to get to the shops, it's like Christmas, but 2 weeks worth rather than 2 days!
Well I've decided there are 2 types of people at the moment.
1) The media have blown it out of all proportion, we have 600 (varies, I've heard 6000 as well) deaths from flu each winter in the UK alone.
2) (And this is as close to a direct quote as I can remember) The government never tell us the whole story, if they're telling us this much then the actual situation is a whole lot worse!
My biggest issue would be being confined for 2 weeks, I'd need to find a bell to take running with me, unclean, unclean, keep your distance!
