Hi on wk 5 and getting terrific pain in my big toe and doctor tells me it’s pressure from running , my trainers are a half size bigger than normal as advised so my question is has anyone had this problem and run in open toe walking sandals like Karrimor because my trainers are causing the nerves to get trapped and have to think of an alternative

Perhaps you need a wider shoe.

Do you have a thumbs width clearance between big toe and the front of the toe box?

There is huge variation in the sizing of shoes from one manufacturer to another.

I have known people run in open shoes, but they are not running shoes and will not give the support or cushioning of a running shoe.

This post gives general advice on buying shoes. healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Yes half size larger than normal , but when I go on long walks in boots I get the same problem pressure builds up on my toes and then the nerves get trapped

Are your "normal" shoes particularly tight?

Most people's feet spread after they have been on them for any period of time, which can cause pressure, leading to pain or numbness.

Maybe you need shoes that are a full size larger than your normal shoes.

My running shoes are a size bigger than my regular shoes in Nike and a size and a half bigger from Decathlon. As above sizes vary a little, and it’s all about the room in the toe box.

There are brands that have wider toe boxes that could potentially help you.

Here's an article that names some. Another brand is Innov8, and there's another that is escaping me... I'l find it... it's Altra

I wonder if it is worth having a chat to running shop folk about how you lace your shoes. The cause of the pain may not be where you are feeling it. It could also be that your feet are slipping a little in larger shoes.

A podiatrist might also have useful input.

I do run in my sandals but they are Keens and have a massive bumper on the front, I can't wear open toed footwear at all due to a nasty old injury.

Not what you're looking for?
