Hi all!

My last post (I’ve just checked!) was an embarrassing 4 whole years ago, when, according to my posts at least, I was doing alright, training for a 10k (which I completed along with a couple of others!) and running regularly. But, as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end and my running days did, fairly spectacularly about 2 years ago, when a fairly innocuous and unimpressive stumble (not even a fall!) left me with torn tendons in my left ankle. They didn’t heal well and if I’m being honest, still give me a bit of jip! I’ve come to the end of treatment options, having had a few steroid injections and declining the option of surgery (in my mind the risks associated with it don’t outweigh the issues I’m having, if that makes sense?)... so... today I dusted off my trainers and clicked play on the week 1, run 1 podcast! I’m cross that I’m back at square one, cross that it wasn’t easy and cross that it’s taken 2 years to start again (a good 4 months of which were probably down to procrastination, if I’m being honest), but... I will pull on my trainers again a couple more times this week and push on... I know I can do it (ankle notwithstanding).

Any advice re coming back with a slightly dodgy ankle? Any words of encouragement for someone who is feeling a bit wobbly (physically and mentally!) and any tips for getting through the next 9 weeks? X

Hi I_will_do_it ...I feel like I need to give you a healing hug (virtually sent!!) you obviously miss running and you’ve missed being on here, 4 years is yonks...but you’ve come back and that is to be celebrated!!

Injuries can last for ages, you know your body better than anyone but all I can say is take it easy..slowly, gently and steady see how you get on, nobody’s rushing you so easy does it...keep us posted though x

Thank you for my hug!! I’ll try and head your words of advice, but I’m a bugger for getting carried away and trying to ‘run through it’... I’m frustrated I’m back at the beginning, but am hopeful I’ll rediscover the running bug and enjoy the journey!

To be fair, I would go get my gait analysis done again. If you had it done before, it is now out of date at least due to the injury. You will run differently to before. Also spend out of the preformed insoles. They make a world of difference to comfort and along with the gait analysis, they can help to avoid injuries. 👍🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Of course you may have already done this and good for you. If not, with your injury it will be invaluable. But also don't forget the warm up and cool downs, even more important now. Not just walking, but something to get you pumping the blood around. Good luck this time round.
