Dogs - what's that all about?

Is it just me, but dogs keep straining on their leads and going for my ankles when I "run" past? The small ones seem to be worse. Putting me off a bit. I've never noticed it when out with my own dog (chocolate lab) but he's more interested in diving in hedge rows.

It was particularly bad last night but now wonder if they could smell blood. I somehow ended up with a nail through my trainer and it broke the skin. The kids seem unimpressed with my sporting injury!

Ouch, how did that happen? Some dogs just have inconsiderate owners 😥 they must know how their dogs react to runners. I always do my best to take alternative routes if possible otherwise I eyeball the owner, slow down and lift my hands in the air, owners soon get the message that a timid runner is around ha ha

Dogs see something moving fast their natural instinct is that it is either food for them to hunt, or they are being attacked hence going for the runners, I had an 8 stone German Shepherd and if i saw a runner it worried me a bit! He never bit anyone but would rise up if you know what i mean, just give them a wide berth, or stop and get to know them, once they see you as a friend, it should be less of a problem, its the owners that need training to re train their dogs, but that is not going to happen.

Good luck!

I know exactly what you mean. You see I have a Jack Russell and he hates runners but he is on a short lead and I have him under control. It something to do with people going by anything faster than a walking pace. 😊

I'm not particularly fast. They're probably trying to put me out my misery!

I'll have to try and spot the dogs before they see me and take a wide berth. Perhaps I'll put some treats in my pocket.

There's a guy on one of my running routes , he walks a Beagle. The dog is on an extending lead that isn't locked he has headphones on (the guy not the dog)🤣 and he's on his phone. I know the dog is going to bark at me know . So like you I give them a wide berth.

Some dog owners haven't a clue

Yes, dogs do seem to show an interest, but most owners have pulled them to one side when I’ve passed, which I would do with mine. But if they’re off lead it can be a bit nerve racking!
