Ummed and ahhed

Was indecisive today with the strong wind and rain as to whether to get out and go today. Decided after half hour of umming and ahhing to get on with it.

I managed 4 of the runs on wk 2 run 1 before the weather got the better of me. I was surprised that 90 second runs weren’t anywhere near as difficult to do as I expected, although I can’t get the 1,2,3,4 breathing to come naturally. Looking forward to the next run, hopefully in nicer weather.

I didn't go out tonight but well done you ! 🤗

I really don’t blame you, most probably a very sensible decision to be honest.

Thank you. I think it was more defiance over a friend - and I use the term loosely now lol - laughing while sarcastically saying I wouldn’t be braving a run in it tonight. Sadly or not depending on your view point, my stubborn side won over the common sense side lol.

Don’t worry about 1,2,3,4 breathing. Only breathing comes naturally and it only becomes easier when you get fitter. There is nothing natural about 1,2,3,4 breathing. Just breath. Everything comes together and becomes so much easier the more you run and the fitter you become. So just relax and enjoy the journey.

Thank you Damien, I appreciate your advice, and I’ll just go for what is natural and comfortable from next run. Sarah won’t know if I’m doing exactly as she says during the run or not lol.

damienair profile image

I don’t think Sarah does any running or knows what she is talking about. She is just a voice actor reading from a script. 😀

Lol yep. That’s why I’m happy to ignore her on the breathing lol 😂

Sarah died on me, I had to change coach. Maybe Sarah forgot to breath herself 🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤣

Good job getting out there! I almost let the weather put me off but was glad when I did get out. I'm sure the breathing will come with practice.

Thank you Luke666. And well done for getting out there too

I didn't go out. Firstly I didnt leave myself enough time this morning before work so decided I would go after work. What a silly decision as the weather was awful and I wasnt brave enough. I really wish I had gone this morning. I will be setting my alarm 15 mins earlier in the morning. Well done to you for doing it!

Bluecat9 profile image
Bluecat9 in reply toLynnie18

Thank you Lynnie18 I have very little chance of dragging myself out of bed to go for a run. It’s hard enough for anything else to be honest lol.

Good luck with your run tomorrow and fingers crossed the weather is better than today.

I've just checked the weather and it seems that early morning is ok,gales of up to 50mph from 3pm! Definitely going first thing!

Sounds like a good plan to me. Good luck. I’ll be back out Thursday evening hopefully

Good for you for getting out there!

That's the stuff the runners are made of 🙂.

Yeah I'm with the others, I dont thing about timing of breathing, steps or anything else.

Just do what feels good. Remembering to breath is good. Not tripping over laces is good. But after that, just do your thing and it will come naturally.

Bluecat9 profile image
Bluecat9 in reply toRunningMigster

Thank you Mig. I’ve managed to avoid tripping over laces so far, although I did very nearly run into an overgrown bush tonight, just spotted it in time, but to be fair that’s a normal thing just walking down the street for me haha.

Well done 😁

Well done! A run seems SO much more satisfying when you’ve had to battle through the wind and rain too. I graduated in November and I still can’t get to grips with that style of breathing. It makes me more worn out! So don’t feel pressured if it doesn’t work for you

Bluecat9 profile image

That’s great you graduated Rhedeg How are you finding it to run without the app?

Havin read all of the replies I’ve received this evening I won’t even be thinking about my breathing when I run in future, as long as it’s happening that’s all that matters :)

in reply toBluecat9

I found it a bit strange to start with without the app. It’s a bit like no man’s land 😆 Someone here told me to just go out and enjoy running for the sake of it and I did and I started to love it again. Good for you. You’ll find your own way and just go with it 👍🏼

That‘a what I’m expecting, although I’m only on wk 2 so it’s a way off yet lol.

I’m glad you’re loving your running. I think that has got to be an important factor.

Hi bluecat9 I'm at the same stage as you I'm on week 2 and hoping to do run2 tomorrow morning, but was just listening to the wind thinking ohhh dear, lol. I really dont want it to get the better of me but will see how the weather is in the morning. I thought the same as well that the 90 sec runs weren't as bad as I was expecting them to be but will see what tomorrow brings for run 2, and well done to you.

Bluecat9 profile image
Bluecat9 in reply toBeginnermum

Good luck Beginnermum.

It wasn’t so bad in the wind and rain, I just found the wind took my breath a little quicker. I’m also asthmatic which is pretty well managed but thought best not to push my luck too far :)

Well done. Difficult today in all that rain. So soggy. But that warm glow of self satisfaction when you are done. 😎👍

You did better than me. I took one look at the weather and spent the afternoon in the cinema - very decadent (or plain lazy).

Oh! Glad to read you enjoyed. I’m always worried about going to see films of classics, I’m scared that they will change the story and then I’d be mad and feel cheated! Planning to get to see it at some point.

Quite true to the book (although I read it 45 years ago) and beautifully shot.

I always Do 3 breaths out and 2 in works for my gets quite a rhythm going trying but you’ll find your own way eventually

in reply toRobyn3

Thank god for that, I was struggling to do four in...could do them out but not in! I’ll just do what I can. As a 30 a day ex smoker, I think my lungs need to build up a bit more!

Well done braving the weather! I headed out the door for mine, then came straight back in , collected my keys and headed to the treadmill at the gym! I was doing week 8 run 3 and having done run2 through sleet and wind, just couldn’t face it outside! I always feel a bit as if I am cheating at the gym but was glad of the warmth yesterday!

Hi, I know what you mean about the weather as Monday was bad here. We finished week 2, last night, as I have joined a C25k course put on by a local running club. It helps inspire me to get out despite the weather. I heard the advice about counting, but stuck to what I learned from a YouTube video on running - just breathe deeply in & out to maximise use of your lungs. C25k should be at an easy enough pace to make that possible!
