1st park run

Challenged myself to complete parkrun by 71st Birthday. Really hard work but very proud!

Just over 36 mins but a bit dispirited to be almost last πŸ™. Not sure whether to keep going at this pace or try to push myself. Happy running on my own but felt a bit pressured in big group.

🧐 you did it in 36 mins and you were last? That must be a small elite group. I attended my first Parkrun Saturday and came 838th! And there were 50 odd behind me. I did 41.37 mins and the slowest I think was about an hour and a quarter. Maybe try another group?

That’s really encouraging, think I will look for a larger group as it is a bit depressing when everybody overtakes you! I was the fastest female in my age group (but only female in my age group!!)

I’m betting not many VW65-69 beat you either!

I was much further behind you, as were millions of us - because we didn’t even go! I am impressed.

You did it and 36 minutes is faster than most of us started on. You should be so proud of yourself ! Don’t compare yourself to others, just enjoy the community spirit and you will probably find you get faster each week anyway. The founder of parkrun is really pleased to see the average times go down because it means new runners are coming in.

Bayo, you little beauty! πŸŽ†πŸ™ŒπŸŽ‰πŸ’ͺπŸ‘πŸ‘ It's not you, that must have been a fast parkrun. Parkrun is a wonderful thing to do, I hope you enjoyed it. It sounds like you've found the downside of it, because when you go for the first time on your own, it's hard to keep your own pace among so many others. And if it happens to be a particularly fast field of runners, then you judge your own performance harshly. I ran my first parkrun last year aged 60 with a few buddies, we finished in 38 minutes and there were plenty of people behind us. 36 minutes is a great time for a first run. Check your result by age category, that should cheer you up. Next time, try to ignore the surge of runners at the start. Maybe put yourself a bit nearer the back, run you own run, and don't worry about where everybody else finished. It is not a race! Some people walk the whole thing, or run a bit, walk a bit, and take the best part of an hour to get around. Be proud! Be very proud!

I graduated in May and still don't do 36 minutes for 5k and I am younger than you. I would be over the moon with that time.

I think you should be shouting from the roof tops : )

Wow! 71 and running 36 at your first parkrun... that’s truly amazing! I’m gonna guess you weren’t beaten by many others in your age/gender group, and that if you were they had a lot more than one completed run.

What you do going forwards is up to you... most of your running (minimum 80%) should be at comfortable pace. If you do want to work on pace, then you’ll also need to run further once a week.

Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing even at parkrun... it’s still only a run against yourself, like any race. If anyone is analysing the results of that parkrun, they’re only going to be amazed.

Awesome pace! I'm 64.i graduated in April and my first park run took 46 minutes. I'm still running and going further and faster and loving it. So far my fastest 5k is 42 minutes and I'd give my eye teeth for your time! I've decided the way that works for me is just to concentrate on myself. I tell myself that park run is a run not a race or I'd stop going! Just enjoy it. You have done something wonderful for yourself and you're doing great!
