Foam roller recommendation please?

I keep hearing about how foam rollers are great (if painful!) - can anyone recommend one for me please, preferably one that won't break the bank as I have already overspent on my running gear budget for about the next 50 years... :) Thank you!

I got a very nobbly one from tkmaxx for Mr grumpy, but I got a a smoother one for myself from Aldi. It was under a tenner, and good enough for me, but I don't have any in-depth knowledge.

Which one, Tasha99? There's 1,000+ on amazon, that's why I want to know what other people use and recommend... :)

They’ve all got fab reviews so any. I wouldn’t bother with a smooth one. Apart from that they’re all the same really. Mine was £6 from Aldi but you’d have to wait for the sports event.

Thank you!

I wouldn't pay more than a tenner for one, they'll tell you that it was made by NASA and used by astronauts but it's just a foam tube at the end of the day. You can use a tennis ball.

They are good though, they work. I don't think it matters what type you get. Loads of videos on youtube.

Really, would a tennis ball work just as well? I have plenty of those...

in reply toDebston

I've seen a couple of videos where they use a tennis ball, it's supposed to be more intense 😬. It might be more difficult to do as well. You're basically just using your body weight and the roller/ball to put pressure on the muscle (about 30 secs) it's your nervous system that relaxes the muscle... Apparently.... I really do need to get out more.

Just to say OF, I ordered one of these from Amazon yesterday after reading your comment (despite diligently exercising, my calves/Achilles seem to be in permanent knots...). Anyway, the stick arrived last night (!) and I used it as directed. This morning my legs feel loose and free!! AMAZING!! First time since beginning JuJu!! So thank you SO MUCH for the recommendation (I’ve now ordered the foot massage balls too... 😉) x x

I've just taken delivery of a Physix Stick based on this thread. I've had a persistent knot in my achilles for I don't know how long. 10 minutes with the stick and it's so much better I can't describe it! Thank you so much for the recommendation.

I got one out of Aldi’s I know TK Max do them as well. They are sore when using but I now do it after every gym class and I do think they help

I got one from ‘the smile’ internet company (the Bionix 3 in 1) for £12.99 (but prices may have changed) - you get a spiky ball, 1x smooth & 1x patterned roller and a bag. All items seem sturdy for the price, so hopefully between us all, you’ll find something 🤗 x

Hi Debston! I got my roller from The Range in Hull, it was £12 I think, and it's smooth, does a great job on sore muscles, I don't like the nobbly ones they hurt too much! I think there is a website?😊

I have a smooth Aldi one and was £4.99 it sorted the issues I was having along with eating more bananas and drinking more fluids.

Yes get one, but they all vary in price, also I use a "wand" for my calves and under my feet so plantar fasciitis doesn't set in. The trick is to use these things every time you exercise, to keep things nice and loose, its taken me years to work that one out, as well as stretching. I was a devil thinking I could get away with the minimum of these things. Also another great inexpensive tool is the trusty tennis/golf ball. As for pressure do it gradually and get more firm as you go, or get someone else to apply for you. Good luck :-)

Thanks all, I have ordered the physix stick and am currently using a tennis ball until the roller arrives later today through the magic of amazon prime!

Thats the one I have too Debston, as recommended by Floss. Its very good, watch the video to see how to use it properly. Don't roll your knees. xx

I love this roller stick. It means it’s highly portable: I take it to the gym for post workout rolling. Does look like something from the Ann Summer’s running range...! But I use it more than the foam knobbly thing these days...

Thanks! And yes, they do all seem to look rather Ann Summersy! 😂

...I am technically challenged and can’t post link, but my favoured roller is the Muscle Stick Pro by Physix Gear. On Amazon.

I don't use a foam roller but I swear by my massage stick, I use it every day and take it on holiday too. Extremely reasonable and mine is still going strong after about 2.5 maybe 3 yrs

I got a cheap and cheerful smooth(ish) one from Aldi/Lidl and it does the job.

There are plenty of recommendations on this conversation. (My sports masseuse said you can use a rolling pin!)

Do look on YouTube for roller exercises.

Granspeed profile image

Ha. Like the rolling pin. 😄 I use a tennis ball as recommended by my chiropractor. But it is an awkward shape for some muscle areas.
