Has anyone used a Foam Roller ?

I've read that using one before a run is more effective and safer than stretching, also that they are good for easing tight muscles ? Does anyone have any experience of them ?

Never used one before a run, but then I never stretch before runs, I just warm up with either a brisk walk or usuallly a slow run. Then when I finish I stretch my legs/hamstrings. Then I usually have to drive home 10 or 20 mins, get out of smelly/wet things/shower then do more stretching in the comfort of my living room and only if I have a twinge (usually hip) add in some foam rolling. Most forums I go on don't say to stretch or use a roller beforehand as muscles are cold.

I've heard that this is a good thing to use for stretching - I'm going to ask the physios at work tomorrow, as I did something to one of my left calf a week and a half ago and it's still sore. So, if I manage to have a go on the foam rollers or get any info, I'll let you know. Am also interested in reading any other posts about them!

I don't stretch before runs but when I saw the physiotherapist a couple of weeks ago, she recommended it. Other experts advise against it ! It's very confusing !

They seem to chop and change their minds about these stretches all the time, I agree it is very confusing. I only stretch after a run before I have cooled down.

I have used a foam roller in the past but as part of a Pilates workout, I'd be interested on the outcome of your query. I wish there was a way to attach a 'Flag' to watch a blog on this site.

I went for my follow up visit to the physiotherapist today so I asked about the foam rollers - her view was that, like most things, they can be very good but might not suit everyone and it depends on the effort you put in and the type of exercise you use it for. I think I'll give it a try. Physio was great - I came out with a lot more movement in my hip than I went in with, after massage in the glute/hip area. I think there are exercises I could use the foam roller for that would have a similar massaging effect.
