I'm a newbie. Week 1 completed this morning. I planned to get proper shoes in UK next month (I live in Hungary) but the day after W1R1, I had shin pain and felt quite disheartened. Hubbie - and the wonderful advice on here - told me that old dog-walking trainers weren't up to the job.
I walked up and down outside the local running shop for five minutes before working up the courage to go in. I felt a fraud. I'm not a runner, why do I need fancy shoes? Surely they'd laugh at me. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. Lovely people, gait analysis, numerous shoes, pigeon-Hungarian and English plus lots of sign language, and numerous options tried, and I'm the proud owner of my first pair of running shoes. Runs 2 and 3 were so much easier (at least on my feet and legs) and now I'm more motivated. I can't waste the money I spent so I have to get to complete this challenge.
Lesson learnt - it's never too early for the right equipment.

Good post from you Puppy love, I went for a gait analysis recently, bought the recommended shoes and socks to match, mucb more comfortable to run in compared to my trainers, just as well, the last 5K I ran in my trainers I was in the verge of damaging my feet, just as well it wasn't a 10K, had a weeks rest off running, now got new running shoes and feet are fine running in them.
I’ve got “half way” and swapped my primark trainers for official running trainer from a sports shop, but didn’t do any gait analysis. The difference it made was huge! But I’ll definitely look into even more investment should my shins or legs hurt - well done you!
I know what you mean, I didn’t want to be “all the gear and no idea..” but at week 4 decided I was in love with running and the purchase was justified. Haven’t looked back since. Happy running in your swanky shoes 🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️🏃🏻♀️
Great job on week one and very good decision to go get the right shoes... they’re the most important bit of kit and indeed they are expensive enough to make you want to use them. Enjoy week 2
This programme is amazing. It is also amazing how your attitude changes to running. I had read a thread regarding gait analysis and had it done. It really has helped me with my running. I changed my running shoes and had an insole put in that really have helped. I recommend gait analysis if you are to progress and perhaps go beyond the programme.
This forum is great for advice and support. Good luck 🏃♀️
I was the opposite! I knew I needed running shoes bit didn't want to spend too much in case I don't keep it up, my logic was that I'll reward myself with fancy and colourful shoes if I get to the end of this! I spent £30 on my kandoor trail shoes which seem to do the job fine. I think I'd be mortified by a gait analysis? Do they weigh you? 🙈🙈
I was dreading it too but it was absolutely fine. I just had to run in both directions on a short track in the shop and the lovely lady immediately told me what sort of shoes I needed. No scales in sight and no mention of weight. It was completely painless.
Well, I'm very happy that you've pulled yourself together and started running again. Despite the fact that you have a sore knee, you achieved the goal, that's worthy of respect, at least mine. I also had a long and painful recovery from a leg injury. I didn't want to do anything, not even try. My husband supported me as much as he could, and helped me. I still don't understand how he didn't leave me at that time. To cheer me up, he decided to buy me the Best Pink Tennis Shoes that he saw on the Internet. I looked at these sneakers for a long time, I liked them so much, and I thought that I want to wear these beautiful sneakers.
