Slow down and slow down again! You can do this!

Also, set your three run days each week and stick to them, no excuses, come rain, sleet or shine.

Your knees might hurt in week 2 or 3 but it happens to a lot of people and is temporary. Take ibuprofen 🤣

Depending how overweight, you may need to check with your doctor (boring I know). Then, slowly is the most important thing - I am still slow, but I am doing it and that is the key. This is a great place to be for encouragement and advice and it really boosted me to see others struggling, succeeding, all of it. Go go go! 😎

That's how I started! Sedentary work had left me rotund with high BP and High Cholesterol. I started going to the gym 4-5 times a week with 1 hrs light cardio then I started C25K. I have to say I started on the treadmill as it was easy to work with, I could set a speed for the walk and run that I was capable of. After graduation I went outside and restarted at week 7 and found that a good way to go. I feel I could also have started outside but living in TRNC it gets very hot at time so I was trying to make it all as achievable as possible by taking away barriers. I have now done the Bridge to 10 and ran in 2 events, a 7 and a 5 km. Seriously hot here so I am now just maintenance in the gym having done my last outdoor run in 20degrees at 6am!

Tips, make it achievable by going slow. Get everything ready the day before so fewer barriers, get up early and run in the morning, it sets you up for the day. You will find if you go slow the barriers are in your head. Decent shoes, you do not have to have the latest and you will find last years ASICS are about £40, look at sportsshoes.com, some good advice and DIY pronation tests too. Lastly, if you do this you will NEVER regret it!

Keep us all posted on your progress and pm me if I can help further.

Hi kitten, I'm obese and I have graduated c25k. If you don't have any other medical conditions or your GP says you are ok to do it, just start! I did it in a treadmill because I had a knee injury and was worried about the impact on the knees, and also because I'm incredibly clumsy so my chances of surviving the treadmill were much better, but that's a personal choice.

The most important thing is to listen to the abuse and go slow, the feeling when you complete each run is so good and you will see the effects, maybe not in weight loss, but you will feel fitter and healthier

Hi - I'm five stone overweight and I'm about to start week 4. I'm not going to lie - I did find it really hard at first and I have needed to repeat all three weeks so far to run the full times for each run. BUT I am getting there and I'm really pleased that I've persevered. For the first week, I had very bad knee and shin pain and also kept getting numbness in one foot but then I rested for a few days and I've been OK since. The key thing is to take it slow - the first couple of times I went out I was trying to run way too fast and it wasn't remotely sustainable for me! Now I've got the hang of a slow jog it's much more achievable. Even years ago when I was slimmer and fitter, I was never really able to run - I did other types of exercise but couldn't get the hang of running. But I feel like I could master this if I keep trying and don't worry too much about how long it takes me to get to the end of the programme. You will be fine! Don't be put off by the initial aches and pains or if you can't manage all the runs at first - you'll get there.
