A comment by DiscoRunner reminded me of Dr Tanaka's slow jogging. This morning, I decided to do a slow jog instead of my usual 5k. I ran 4.2k at 7.1 min/km (my previous 5k was at 5 min 2 seconds pace!). My heart rate initially rose to 131 bpm but settled down quickly to give an average of 111 bpm for the 30 mins.
So how was the slow jog? In short, wonderful. It was great to jog along with a stride length of (only) 83 cm, breathing through my nose and enjoying the sunshine, the butterflies, the wild flowers and my music. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to enjoy your running more or wanting to introduce some variation.
Definitely think if anyone is not enjoying their running, whether graduate or just starting their c25k journey, this can change everything. It really makes running, and pleasurable running at that, available to everyone!
I agree 100%. I was just starting C25K this time last year in similar hot weather and I'd say that slow jogging is probably an easier introduction to running than the first few weeks of C25K.
I think it's a great way of following the '80% of your mileage should be slow and steady' mantra. I'm in the habit of setting off too fast even when I intend running a slow, steady 5k.
AS a follow-up to the "Slow Jogging" video, this video is excellent - the same slow jogging action can then become a full on fast running action youtube.com/watch?v=Lhrae87...
