I am being brave and going into town for a gait analysis. It will be interesting to see what they say but since I have a habit of starting hobbies and giving up after a while, I am wary of spending too much money!
Gait analysis: I am being brave and going into... - Couch to 5K
Gait analysis
I went, felt really stupid but they just don't care - they do it all day every day and are not interested in your body shape/commitment/story, they are just doing a job. It was all fine!
Thank you. So long as I don't have to run for more than a min lol.
I think it is two minutes - but they set the machine and wander off. Anyway, you canβt give up, I read your posts!
Lol thank you. I can't run for 90s!! I will get there early and say, get me off this thing. I am not good on a treadmill. I feel the need to hold on to the rails lol.
Donβt set yourself up to feel stupid - go and do a slow jog - you need to be comfortable in the trainers you buy. I ended up spending Β£130 which I didnβt want to do - give them a budget beforehand...
Let me know how it goes!
I will. I don't plan to buy anything expensive without thinking about it. Β£130 is a lot!
I know - right? My husband encouraged me, otherwise I wouldnβt have bought them... bloody ridiculous...
I went a few days ago. I admit I was a bit self conscious as I certainly don't look like a runner yet, but it was all good. I explained I was doing the plan and they explained the analysis. I jogged on a treadmill for about 20 secs (not fast, setting 5) and they took a video. Turns out I am a neutral runner so didn't need any specific support. I was then given the option to try about 5 different pairs, again, tried them all on the treadmill and was encouraged the choose the most comfortable pair. The guy told me as I was a beginner he wouldn't bring the most expensive range out, which suited me fine. The trainers I tried varied in price for about Β£80 to Β£140. I chose a pair of Nikes, which were discounted due to being "last season ". I didn't know that at the time.....anyway. what I'm trying to say the experience wasn't at all embarrassing and no one tried to make me spend more money than I wanted to. ...enjoy your shopping experience ππ
Where about did you go for your analysis?
I'm in Kent so went to a little running shop 'the running outlet ' in Canterbury. Would definitely recommend them.
Go equipped... I use the Price Spy app... get that gait analysis and when choosing your shoe tap it into the app... maybe theyβll charge for analysis if you donβt buy and you can still find the shoe cheaper elsewhere... maybe theyβll price match.
Itβs definitely worth doing on a treadmill with video analysis. I originally had mine done at around week 3 but went to a running shop who just watched me run up the street. I was fitted in a pair and got them. After a couple of runs my ankles were so swollen and in great pain. I was told by my gym instructor to have my gait checked again as they felt I over pronated and needed a support shoe.
I then had a video analysis done and got a pair which were a support shoe and the difference in my knees and ankles has been immense! Itβs worth the money in my opinion getting a decent pair. I have just finished the programme but was out for a few weeks due to having the wrong shoes.
Thank you. I am fascinated to know how I run. I feel like my foot fall is fairly 'normal' so will be interesting to see.
If you are, shall we say, gifted up top, don't forget to put your sports bra on, I didn't get gait analysis done but did try my shoes out and I was very self conscious in the wrong bra lol
Iβm definitely not βgifted up topβ but running without my sports bra felt like getting in the car and not fastening the seat belt! I made the mistake of not wearing mine for gait analysis
Ooh that sounds interesting! Hope to hear how you get on ππ»
I will reveal all when I return!
Itβs worth it. If you need trainers then youβre better off getting the right ones for your feet. Fingers crossed that you are neutral and can choose whatever you like. Even if youβre not, there should be a range of prices on offer. I wasnβt neutral but was lucky; my first pair of proper trainers were in the sale. I didnβt know that when I fell in love with them, but it was such a bonus!! Theyβre retired now, and the new version of them is out there pounding the streets! Good luck. The shop people arenβt worried about how you run. Youβll probably find them to be genuine runners who really want to support you. We all start somewhere.π π
I had a gait analysis after being recommended to do so as I had knee and shin splint pain. I spent a lot more on trainers than Iβd anticipated, however itβs the best investment in running I made! I tried several pairs of trainers, it just happens that βyou get what you pay forβ is true.
Make sure you have the same socks on you would run in to, I managed to get my asics shoes from the outlet store in Portsmouth, if you find something you like in the store check on Amazon as alot of independent stores will be more expensive, i started out with karrimors as a beginner and they were fine you only really need to get the more expensive shoes when you run for longer distance, try ones that say gel pulse or something similar
Thank you. I live in Southampton! I run in Karrimors too. The store said they provide the shoes. Which I thought was unusual. I asked if I should wear my usual trainers and he said, we provide you with a pair.
I had one done at a local shop and bought some running shoes for Β£80 went home to find them on the M and M website for Β£30!
I know where to get next pair from
Where what you would run in, current shoes as well.
I had to run bare foot on the treadmill which I hadn't really thought about.
Be honest with the staff about what you are doing. My chap was extremely supportive/encouraging about my c25k journey
Before you hand over any money check you can take the shoes back, once you've used them outside. If not go somewhere else! I used a shop in Portsmouth who were brill.
I asked not to know the price until I had chosen my shoe becasue i didnt want that to influence my decision. but I have really bad over pronation so corrective shoeing is a must π€£
I then tested them by jogging up and down the pavement. Bless him told me I could go for a run round the block if I wanted a proper try out (A bit beyond my capability at the time!)
I even ended up with a diff trainer on each foot at one point so try and decide π
Take your time when choosing. Your trainers should feel comfortable from the word go so any rubs or pressure points will not give in time, avoid those.
Have fun and post us a piccy πππ
Know what you mean about starting hobbies - I didnβt get my shoes until I was about 4 weeks in.
I had an older & slightly awkward teenage boy helping me which was quite funny. He did a good job tho, I have a bolt through one of my toes, having broken it years ago so I needed the gait analysis. It doesnβt take long & is well worth it my shoes are great (& were reduced in some sort of early sale - this time of year there should be quite a lot of sale bargains).
Good luck!
Thank you. Sounds painful - a bolt through your toe π©
Meant to say (just been for a run) my shoes have smooth laces & just occasionally they slide undone. The non-smooth ones with more grip might be better.
Detail, itβs all detail!π
Enjoy it. Try on whatever they recommend. I ended up with shoes that i would have thought were half a size too big, but they're just perfect. I bought the bright pink running socks too. (Another tip - don't think about how your bum looks when you watching the gait analysis! π). Happy shopping x
Giving up, that's not an option!!!
Enjoy it, another adventure! and as Cantstopmenow said, try on whatever they suggest, I run in half a size bigger too (Saucony) and so much more comfortable, and I bought a couple of pairs of comfy running socks too. I also set a budget, but my little sports shop gave me a discount because I was "buying local" and all told I was over the moon. I'm sure your place will sort you out, don't be rushed into buying, these shoes have to last you a while and you have to feel happy and confident wearing them! Good luck and look forward to hearing the outcome x
I've got saucony too- soooo comfy and supportive
Definitely get your gait analysed 150%. I waited till week 9 before doing it and wish I had gone earlier but wanted to make sure running was something I would stick at. Went to SweatShop in Maidstone and the advice alone is worth going. Ended up getting the insoles and a new pair of Asicβs. They were in a sale but still Β£99 and Β£45 for moulded insoles. Worth every penny and shoes were only Β£5 more than other places. Touch wood I have not had any problems that I previously experienced and ran 8.8 Km yesterday. Cannot stress enough how good the best running shop staff are for advice. My view is that the cost is an insurance for my feet, ankles, shins and knees etc. Almost forgot - there was no pushy sales at all, just fantastic support.
Hope you get sorted and enjoy the experience.
I have just been to Sweatshop. Decided Β£45 for insoles was too much. Will share my photo of new shoes on a separate thread as I can't seem to add a photo here.
You can send a simple video in to Sportsshoes.com and they will do it for free. Never spent more than Β£45 on a pair of trainers. Last 2 pairs have been Asics
I spent Β£60, money well spent, feel like I'm walking on air!!!
It is really worth doing. I had mine yesterday and it was brilliant. Really encouraging, and very helpful.
I would have just picked a recommended shoe in my normal size. Ended up with a size bigger and I am so pleased with my purchase. Well worth doing. Good luck.
Idk if this is too late, but I had mine done and then when they suggested I spend Β£140 on a pair of trainers, I said I'd think about it. Couldn;t really afford that for something that might be fleeting, but I did want a decent pair of trainers. In the end I went online (think it was sportsshoes.com) and I bought the same brand/type but last years model for around Β£60. They've served me well and I'm still running a year later.
I have never been able to run and got gait analysis and proper fitting trainers and blew through the c25k made a massive difference fo me
