Dog or no dog

I’ve just bought myself and the dog a running belt. Has anyone here tried running with their canine companion. My worry is if we see a dog she’ll want to play. Any advice welcome.

Going to attempt week 8 run 3 today.

Hi , I ran with my dog up until the non interval runs and now (much to her utter disgust!) I run without her but walk her immediately after which makes her happy and my legs benefit from a longer walk after.

I think if I didn’t have to run along a road I would still take her but I worry about her accidentally tripping me up or being distracted by smells!

I know cheekychipmunks runs with her dog, so I’m sure she will be able to help you. I see lots of dogs running with their humans at parkrun , with varying degrees of discipline. So, A lot depends on the training and practice. 🐕🏃‍♀️

Thank you both so much. A walk after is what I’ve been doing so far but her little face tempted me to take her with me 🐶

I guess I’ll try today and see how we go. Lovely wet run by the looks.

I’d not thought about tripping up or near roads so local park good place to start.

I guess if we don’t complete run I can try on my own tomorrow.

I absolutely love running a pooch 🐶 , but I don't actually have a dog, I borrow one. When I do I usually drive to some isolated woods so I can take her off her lead and run wild. She does her own thing and then just catches me up when she's finished sniffing around. Lots of people run with dogs on here.

So I took the dog with me and we both got soaked. We ran together around our local heath pond. I did put her in her Halti head collar to aid control. She was fantastic, I had really underestimated her. We stayed in pace together well. Success.

Unfortunately we didn’t quite complete the full 28 mins non stop. I think running was about 20-22 mins and some slight lead adjustments and a quick sniff stop, also I kinda missed my usual route. So I guess I will have to repeat this run. But I couldn’t be happier. Thanks everyone 🏃‍♀️ 🐶

I will certainly continue to bring her with me on my weekend runs for now so I can run my usual route( too many roads but pretty flowers) during the week.

all my training is canix (but dont take them to pr)

a couple of points-

1.harness must not press on windpipe and shoulders must be free.(i have a zero dc and a howling wolf as i have 2 different shape dogs)

2.the running belt sits on your hips and leg straps to stop it riding up.(some belts have handy zipped pouch for stuff)

3.dog connected to you by a bungee line (i have 1.5mt (pr lenght) but you can get longer ones) my bungie line has a traffic handle i can grab too.

when passing other dogwalkers i give them a wide berth ,if not able to do this i stop and rein my dog in and have him focus on me while the others pass by.

i am quite pro-active if i spot loose dogs upfront who may be troublesome and have had call out `get your dog`.

dog walking ettiquet (sp) says if you meet an on lead dog then put yours on but a lot of people dont get it :(

good canix suppliers are `k9trailtime` and `k9sport` and there are many canix fb groups with members letting you try different products if they have them.

personally i can run faster with my dog but with toilet stops and avoiding other dogs it usually works out the same time.

trail trainers are better as more grip.

Fantastic information thank you.

I discovered today it was the off leash dogs coming over to us that were the problem. When we were left to it my dog ran so well right at heel by choice. I will check her harness for windpipe tightness.

Thank you for the supplier tips will have a look now. Not that I need encouragement to buy stuff for running or the dog lol

🤩

Happy shopping and running

Yeah 🥳

Hi Sp81, yes as Dexy said, I run with my dog a lot. She’s a Labrador and we both have a fabulous time. I have a hands free lead which is very useful, and as I have the waistband loose, if she changes sides the lead just swivels round. 😀

All I’d say is I only run with her on the lead up to about 6k or 7k as I don’t think it’s fair making a dog run in a straight line for a long time without being able to stop and sniff etc. When I do runs longer than that I use a route where she can go off the lead if I can, otherwise she stays at home. Parkrun is a must though - she’s well known there, both when I run and volunteer! 🏃‍♀️🐕

Try it. It’s fantastic having a running buddy! ❤️

I only run with my dog. Harness with bungee lead definitely better if you are somewhere that needs a lead and it is a good hint to the dog that this is not a sniffage walk. Otherwise, carrying good treats and keeping going, so the onus is on the dog to keep up helps. (Obviously sometimes you just have to double back if there are people/dogs/cyclists around)
