Hi everyone, can you advise me on trainers/ running shoes? I want to treat myself but I'm new to this and have no idea what I'm looking for. I tend to tun along the canal on a stony path. Any suggestions welcome and thanks in advance.

Hi there, I started running in my Skechers not realising that one pair of trainers were any different to another and as much as I love these , I had terrible knee problems.

Luckily I work for a physio who told me i needed more of a supportive shoe as my feet fall in as I run and this was putting strain on certain parts of my legs/joints etc. Everyone’s feet fall differently I think.

I believe running shops often offer a gait analysis where they watch you run and advise you from there.

I tried several Nike and ASICS trainers on but they just didn’t feel right and so I went on to buy brooks adrenaline gts 19 as it is a support shoe and so comfortable.

Maybe have a google to see if gait analysis is available near you?

Ok, I'm going to say that I'm glad it worked for you, but I would not make that recommendation.

Of course if you have had gait analysis, and SD stock the recommended trainers, go for it.

They are not experienced in gait analysis, and you are likely to spend money on a trainer that is wrong for you.

I recommend getting gait analysis done at a running shop - they will video you running on a treadmill, assess how your foot falls, and then recommend either a supportive or a neutral running shoe. The right running shoe will help prevent strains on muscles and joints. You will pay more for your trainers at a specialist shop, but they won't charge for the gait analysis if you buy from them. I also found their advice on the fit was really helpful, as they suggested a larger size than I would normally buy, and though it wasn't completely obvious to me at the time, they were absolutely right! Once you know which shoe suits you best you can always look for it online in the sales when it's time for a new pair!!

I wanted to add that it really is worth spending the money on a correct pair of trainers and this really could be the difference between running and not running due to injury.

Once I bought mine, I thought to myself I’d better carry on no matter what because of how much trainers cost!! Luckily they’re getting good use!

I went to Runnersneed and had gait analysis done. Never knew what trainers were right and turned out I needed a slight stability shoe and was handed a couple to try. Ended up buying a pair of Brooks and I absolutely love them. Worth getting the analysis done... think it's a free service wherever offers it but worth doing to make sure you get the right trainers. Mine weren't cheap but knowing they are right for me, they are worth every penny.

I agree about the gait analysis. I went for this last year and got some Brooks Gts 18s. They are men’s trainers, they fit me better than the ladies ones as they are wider. They are bright orange and black. I have since been on Amazon and I’ve purchased another pair in blue, and they were much cheaper as they were in the sales and last years colour. I’m keeping the new ones in reserve, as I hope to keep on running and these trainers suit me.
