Running while fasting

Hello everyone!

I am currently at week 7 run 3, it's the holy month of Ramadan and I was wondering if anyone has tips for running while fasting? What's the best time to run and how to compensate for the lack of water/carbs during the day!

Thank you

Ramadan 2019, 5th May to 4th June.

The best time for you to run is just around sunrise, you are allowed to drink and eat a little before sunrise, so if you get up early, about a hour before sunrise which is around 5.20 and getting earlier by two minutes a morning by the end of Ramadan you then can go out and run, good luck.

The thing is that we fast from dawn* to suns

et, dawn is at 02:40am currently so I can't do it. I am looking at other options but thanks for your suggestion!

* Dawn is when the first light of the sun appears in the horizon, and that's when we're supposed to begin fasting. There is technical difference between sunrise and dawn, at least religiously.

Thank you for that information, that means at first light when dawn starts which at this time of year is around 75 minutes before the sun officially rises you have to fast, I thought it was the official time that the sun rose/set that your fasting began/ended, here where I am in Scotland there is a glow in the sky all night from about 10th June until about 10 July, but Ramadam will have finished by then.

Not sure what your other options will be, running at midnight, !!??

I think I'll run right before I break my fasting, as hunger is not as big a problem as thirst, so I'll make sure to finish my run on iftar time. If that works I'll keep doing it, if not I'll go back a week or two and do it before bedtime.

I am still not sure if this is a better idea than running before bedtime because I don't really sleep before dawn so I'll try and see what works best!

Hi there! There was a post earlier asking this very question. I’m hoping some more knowledgeable folks post some answers. It’s quite a tricky one - as it’s not just the food but the water. The other person was about to start W8, very close to you. I would recommend slowing right down, and maybe sticking to something like w6r1 - it intervals, so there is running but too much. If that proves too hard, maybe go back another week. The difficulty is when you can fit a run in - as you need to consume all your food and water between sunset & sunrise and you’ll need a good 2 hour gap from eating to running. And you’ll need to be left with energy for everything else you have to do! I’m just not sure how safe/good for you it would be to run before breaking your fast. Can you run at night - say an hour or so before bed? Or, a couple of hours after you’ve eaten before dawn?

But if you can do some running (like W6r1), this slow jogging technique may be of great help.

But you May find the long runs from now on a bit too much. If you work something out it would definitely be worth doing a post on it (Ramadan & c25k) then when people search others can learn from your hard work! Ramadan Mubarak!

I don't feel good about going back a week because it'll demotivate me, my 3rd run of week seven is tomorrow so I will try to do it before bedtime and see the result. I will check this video out now. I'll try to keep my progress and if I succeed I will post about it.

Thank you and Ramada mubarak! 😁

I’m with AlMorr... running a little after your fast begins for the day would be my choice. Run well within yourself and you shouldn’t dehydrate much at all. Happy running.

This is a great report by saul01 about running during Ramadan

healthunlocked.com/couchto5....

We have had others that chose to take a running break during this time. I think with most things it will be a personal choice and a try it and see how you feel. You would not come to any harm if you took a break but you might feel able to carry on. The main thing is to put your safely as top priority and ease back on the pace and stop if it doesn’t feel right.

Hi NeptuneG Ramadan Mubarak I too am fasting for Ramadan and ran wk 8 early yesterday morning. It was hard going that said in reflection I had not been out for aaover run for over a wk and went too fast in the first half. I drank loads at Zuhoor and headed out after the school drop off. I think if you hydrate as much as you can before hand and get out as early as u can and go slow youll be ok In sha Allah . Happy Running 👍🏃

Hey! I had 3 runs so far (r03w07 and the first 2 runs of week 8). Done one at sunrise so I was well hydrated as I had had water on suhoor, and ran twice before iftar time and they all went very well. I am going to keep running right before iftar time as I found this easier. Ramadan Mubarak and happy running! 😊
