I’m back to running in the UK after a month in Australia and on a cruise to New Zealand. I will never forget my first run in suburban Sydney, I felt like a grown-up runner in spite of the heat and jet lag, and it was so amazing to hear the Australian birds, smell the flowers and just be somewhere completely different. The flattest was in Melbourne Docklands where I joined the many locals running on the waterfront. My most successful run was on a shipboard treadmill as we came out of Wellington harbour, 32 minutes and according to GPS tracking I covered about 7 miles! (The ship moved, I didn’t 😉)
Now back to the UK and it’s wonderful to see spring arriving and hear our native birds again. It’s a bit of a shock to be cold though! I tried running properly off-road for the first time, on my favourite footpath, without thinking about the fact that it’s gently uphill for most of the distance, and full of lumps and bumps which make running harder work. Still, Laura isn’t listening any more so if I stop after 20 minutes the only person who notices is me.
I feel incredibly lucky to have had such a brilliant holiday and would encourage everyone to pack their running shoes when they go away. Jogging is a great way to explore a little further, it makes you feel so good about yourself, and you have loads of excuses for running a little less far than at home!
