Painful knees

Just completed Week 4 Run 2 and I can honestly say I couldn't wait for it to be over. My run wasn't much faster than the walking because my knees are really hurting. Back home with a bag of frozen peas on each knee.

I can't give up and I won't give up but I can't see me running on Sunday which should be the end of Week 4. I've started with the knee exercises and am using ibuprofen gel. I also ran on grass hoping it would ease things a little.

Do I persevere as I am sure it's my body in shock as its the first bit of exercise I've done for nearly 30 years 😩😨

Your last sentence could apply to a certain extent, however, perhaps you ran a little too fast on your second run of week 4. Have a few days off running and once the pain on your knee has gone drink plenty of water the day before you resume running, go slower than you ran today for 4.3.

Thank you. As much as I don't want to I think I will take a few days break until my knees stop hurting. Thanks for the advice 😊

We all can get aches but you shouldn't be in actual pain. Try and go as slow as possible and make sure you are not thuding your feet down when running. Take a few days rest and see if it helps 😊😊

If you're concerned about it you can always see a GP to make sure. I wouldn't want to tell you to run through it if it's an injury. I see a lot of people running with knee supports, maybe that would help? Good luck, let us know how it goes.

Lots of good advice here. And while you’re resting & recovering take a look at this - m.youtube.com/watch?v=9L2b2... It’s a low impact style of running and having only started running just before my 53rd birthday, not injuring myself has been a key aim. It takes a few views to catch all the techniques, but I run like this all the time (from week 6 when I first saw it) and have had no pain of problems. Hope it’s of help.

The guide to the plan healthunlocked.com/couchto5... gives advice on minimising impact, which is the main cause of knee pain.

Rest until pain free.
