Running shoes?

Heya! Just completed W5R3 :) feels kinda surreal- i ran 2.85km without stopping!

However, towards the middle of my run my shin pain started flaring up on both legs and my hips began hurting? Im pretty sure im doing something wrong :)

Most peole seem to agree that once you finish week 5 you should go get proper running shoes- right now I'm using a no-brand £5 pair.

I know that everyone suits different running shoes but what are your favourite ones so I can have a starting point.

Also are there any good running stores that do proper gait analysis and don't only promote their own products that you can recommend?

Thanks! :)

Beat thing to do is Google gait testing in your area. A lot of places won't charge you for it if you get the shoes from them, so go get checked. 👍

Okay but that's the most sensible thing I've heard all day and I have no idea why I didn't think about it at all (perhaps I should try sleeping for more than four hours :) )- thanks for being the voice of reason :)

Well done on completing wk 5 👍🏻. Your doing well and you don’t want any injuries so I’d get a gait analysis done. A good centre will make sure you get the correct shoes no matter what the price. Go for one that does the treadmill video they are by far the best .... not the cheapest tho. As for your shins.... it could be start of shin splints. Try wearing long compression socks and rest up for a couple of days.....you don’t want to make them any worse and personally I’d rest until I was sure the pain had gone. Better a week off now than 4weeks off later. Good luck 🍀😊🏃🏼‍♀️

This is the first time I'm hearing about compression socks! I did some research and they seemed pretty good so I bought a pair- here's to hoping that they work :) I'll take a couple of days to rest before running again as per your advice - you're right, after all, one week off is better than four!

Now it seems I have to go look for a good running store, that uses a treadmill video thing and is relatively cheap :) that should be easy.....

A good analysis store will give you the money you pay for your analysis off the shoes if you buy from them. It depends where you go to get it done. Friend of mine had hers done by a Podiatrist cost her £45 for the assessment and she went with the inserts they recommended, she moved them from shoe to shoe. I paid £25 at Moti and got my money back off my shoes. Hope you find a good analyst that suits you. 🏃🏼‍♀️😊

That's one less thing I have to worry about at least! :)

Thank you

This guide might help healthunlocked.com/couchto5...

Knowing what others wear is pretty useless info, as their favourites may not even fit you, never mind support your feet correctly.

Thanks for the link! Everything makes so much more sense now :)

My favourite running shoes have always been the ones that an independent running store recommended for me after gait analysis, and I then ran in for 5 minutes on their treadmill. Since then I've purchased 3 more pairs, always the same model with whatever enhancements they bring out each year. When these ones die - about another 200km I reckon - I'll go back for more gait analysis as I've lost some weight since that first assessment.

All independent running shops will sell you something suitable and won't promote any particular brand. However, one well-know, national warehouse of sports fashion brands might bang you out with Karrimor shoes (based on the sales assistant's commission scheme, no doubt). There is nothing wrong with Karrimor shoes, by the way, but they can't be right for everybody can they?

Don't be afraid of getting advice from the assistant in your local independent running shop: they have your best interests at heart. And be honest with them about your budget, they will understand and try to accommodate you. You might even get a discount if you mention C25K, who knows?

Thanks for the reply, it answered a lot of the questions I hadn't even thought I had! :)

I'll take all your advice to heart (especially the discount part, it's worth trying :) )

Well done! I have week five run 3 next although i did about double run 2 distance today which was good. I have had to stop running in the past due to ahin splints so i am terrified about them! I was running in Decathlon own brand shoes on a treadmill doing w5 r2 a few weeks back and my shins just went. I live abroad somewhere you juat cant get stuff so i had to wait to come back to the UK and get measured and tested for shoes. I went to Up and Running and they put me on a treadmill, offered advice and i tried on quite a few shoes, actually running in them. The pair i bought were about 110 i think, so its a lot of cash but ive been fine since running in them and building up mileage again. I can feel my shins now after today but they will be fine for another run Tuesday or Wednesday. So a long winded reinforcement of what everyone else has said! Dont go to a general shop, find a specialist running shop. The guy in Manchester was brilliant and answered loads of questions i had. Good luck!

I've heard about up and running, apparently, they're really good and you seem to have confirmed that :) I think I'll go to one of their stores

Hello hello. I am in the same week as you, nice to see someone else at the same point! Like everyone else had mentioned, it is best to find shoes that suit you rather than go by others favourites. If you are in London (not sure about elsewhere) there is a chain called "Runners Need" where they do gait analysis by making you run on a treadmill and videotaping the run. I found their advice and recommendation extremely helpful.

Thanks for the advice and hi to you too! I did a quick search on google maps and the closest store is 1 hour away :( I'll do some more research on them and I'll probably end up going anyway :)
