I am still wearing my trainers, but have seen a lot of encouragement to get gait tested and get proper running shoes, but they’re so expensive, way out of my range. So, are trainers ok? I have slowed down a bit too, afraid to injure myself

Ideally you need the best running shoe on your feet. Sometimes there’s bargains to be had. If you go a different route, the article I’m linking gives lots of tips. The buy 2 pairs bit probably doesn’t apply to us, we aren’t doing that kind of mileage!
Hi Lansdown, like you I’m on a tight budget and can’t rise to proper running shoes just now. There’s no doubt a proper pair of well made shoes, bought after competent gait analysis, must be helpful, and I suspect lots of people will advise that route. On the other hand, Roger Bannister ran the four minute mile in what were effectively plimsolls. So my answer is, respect your legs. Choose a running surface which is safe and, if possible, not too hard, and if anything hurts, slow down. We churchmice can do this too. And you could always ask everyone to club together for your next birthday !
Go to a running shop that does gait analysis......not a discount shed.........and get advice and preferably a gait analysis. You are not obligated to buy suggested shoes and may find much cheaper ones on the internet, but you need to know what you are buying. Fashion trainers are not running shoes.
My first pair of running shoes cost me more than I would normally spend in a year on clothing or footwear............ more than I have ever spent on a single item of clothing. I have no regrets and bought the replacements for those at half price, because they were last year's model.
If you are going to run then you owe it to yourself to get the best shoes you can afford.
