So, beyond all my expectations I made it through week 7 run 1 then injury struck. I sustained a painful knee which prevented me continuing with the programme. I took advice and rested, iced and took ibuprofen for 2 weeks. Tried a short trial run in Thursday but couldn't do it. Decided to see my doctor who diagnosed a strained or sprained knee after looking and feeling for about 20 second! She advised rest and ice for 6 - 8 weeks plus ibuprofen and paracetamol regularly to combat any inflammation. She assured me that if I follow this advice I'll be back running again soon. Will I have to start again at week 1 if I take this long off. I'm so gutted as I loved my new found hobby. Worried that at 59 my old body won't recover and my running days are over before they've begun 😞😔

So you believed the doctor that you may need 6-8 weeks off and that you should rest/ice/take ibuprofen... but you didn't believe her that you'd be back running again?

It might be wise to start back on intervals if it does take quite that long but I'd say you don't need to begin at the beginning (for one thing, it is all too easy to try to 'sprint' those 60 seconds) You could perhaps put yourself on a walking programme a little before that, maybe swimming, and try some exercise to support your knee.

You've had some really rotten luck and the 'injury couch' will be mighty tedious, but your running is unlikely to be over for good. Let us know how you get on, eh?

Great answer from GoogleMe ........have faith.

There is plenty of non impact training that you can do while not running, which will help you come back stronger.

Have you worked out why you were injured? Have you got proper running shoes fitted after a gait analysis? Do you tend to overstride? Had you recently run hard up or down hills? etc.,etc Ask those questions to try to avoid a repetition.

When you start back you will have to go for a gentle jog to see what you can manage, then build a plan from there.

Take care.

I really feel for you. I got to Week 8 run 3 when I developed trochantor bursitis and and ITB problem. I too will be 6 weeks or so but my physio says she is making it her mission to not only get me running again but to make me a brilliant runner (yaaay). It is frustrating beyond belief - I am 60 and overweight and could not believe how well the programme went when I was following it. I hope you get sorted out and back on it - you will not have undone the great work so far but I know I will be dropping back a couple of weeks to consolidate my running. Good luck.

It’s difficult to tell exactly where you come back... but you got to week 7 and that means that you can certainly complete the plan. Heal well, and if you go back to the start so be it. Try to keep the fitness levels up in other ways that won’t aggravate the knee and it will be a little easier when you’re back.

If u are determined then you will be successful. I have many injuries sustained over my 62 years. The most recent a torn meniscus sustained last September. However I started C25k last October, after the pain had settled somewhat, and prior to diagnosis. By the time I actually saw the consultant post MRI scans I had graduated. The consultant wasn't annoyed. Others had warned me that running is bad for knees. He said we must to do what makes us happy and come and see him again in 3 months. Ordered that I take ibuprofen judiciously. I saw him again last week. All's well. Sort of. Incidentally the scans showed that I have osteoarthritis in both knees and turn meniscus in both knees too. Goes to show what we can cope with.

Good luck.
