Try Again

Hi everyone

I’m still here just not done any running since my shin splints then came down with a bad chest infection after Xmas and just feeling fully recovered.

Anyway, I’m contemplating starting again W1R1 from tonight but I’m worried my shins will play up again, apart from getting my gait measured (I can’t afford costly trainers) does anyone have any advice?

I would just say listen to your body and hopefully you will get a buzz from starting up , very best of luck!

Thanks Greenpants. I’ve been contemplating enrolling at a gym so I can use the treadmill rather than roads to see if that makes a difference but don’t want to waste money

Poor you - I hope you get out again soon! I was advised on here to try and run in ‘fairy steps’, rather than splatting my feet down with each step... when I concentrated on lessening the impact of running, it definitely helped my knees a lot... might be similar with shins? Good luck!

Ahhh ok thanks for that Kertesz, I’ll try that, it may help 👍

I suffered shin splints when I started. It turned out I was "heel striking". I altered my step and haven't had any issues since.

Hi Mike, how did you alter your step? What did you do differently?

Hi Monica, I just tried not to land on my heel. The running coach at work said to try and make your footsteps as quiet as possible.

Monica1969 profile image

So you landed on the ball of you foot instead?

Our coach at work does. I tend to land more flat footed.

Hi there. I really struggled with shin splints at one point and had to have a few weeks off. I went back out and decided to see how I got on but really slowed right down, snails pace, and it worked and I’ve been fine- no more shin splints. I did also have a longer recovery period and got some compression socks. The pace most of all was what worked for me. Best of luck with it all, it really is worth persevering x

Hi Loubeloo, I will also try the slower pace, thankyou

I bought some compression socks, they are footless, ive not had chance to try them so I’ll use them too, thank you x

Stretching too- toe raises and my physio also said pointing your foot down to stretch it then trying to turn your foot outwards whilst stretched. There are some links on here somewhere about stretching. Good luck with it x

I found this very helpful - learning to jog very slowly to avoid injury -

Also with this method you don’t need such thick support trainers as you’re not running that fast.

Hope this helps!

Wow I’ve just watched it, what a difference, I think we all tend to see others speeding along like whippets and think we should do the same, thank you for this x

I know! Reading about this movement, all the health benefits are there, just no risk of injury. I started this quite close to my 53rd birthday, and while determined to get fit, I really wanted to avoid pain or injury. This has really helped me and I feel what I doing is safe for the long-term. Hopefully it’ll really help you too x

I’ll be 50 in December so I want to get fitter, I’m doing Slimming World too as I want to lose a stone (Zante in August lol) I also quit smoking last May so I really want to do this again and do it properly, I loved it last time and got to W4 then the shin splints so hopefully this will now help x

I’m sure you’ll do fine. And measure yourself! I haven’t lost much weight so far (1/2 stone), but I am building muscle and that weighs more than fat, but the inches I’ve lost! 4” off my waist & 2” off my bust & hips. So as you tone with the running you’ll get a nice firm bod! Combined with SW you should do amazingly well!

Woo hoo.,!!! Well as a singleton I’ll be pulling the guys in 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 x
