Hurting lots gutted

Have absolutely loved CT5K and although I’ve had a few niggles to calf’s and hamstrings week 7 has left my knees in a mess, so much so walking down stairs is painful

Fear I need to stop until pain goes if it ever will.

Very disappointing as was planning park runs for end of Jan.

Any suggestions on managing knee pain?

😕- oh noo. Very sorry to hear that. I hope someone will be able to help you here. My only suggestion is to go to your GP.

If you were able to do the weeks before week7 then maybe just stick to brisk walking and short slow running. The most important is that you can get out and be active once your knees recover.

Just a little note I have osteoarthritis and it is the exercise and running that keeps the pain at bay because toned muscles protect the joints. Have a rest and see how it feels. If it is not getting better and you have the right shoes and you have tried some leg stretches then depending on finances see a sports physio or if the budget is tight see your gp and ask for a referral to a nhs physio, there is usually a bit of a wait. Speedy recovery.

I'll second that. Running has been brilliant for keeping the pain in my knees away.

Hey I found that from about week 4 I was getting pains in my knees when I ran. Someone told me to get my gait checked which I did. I run with my heels hitting the ground first. I couldn’t afford to by new running shoes at the time, but I changed the way I run. I was told that it’s less impact on your legs if you land on the middle of your foot then roll through to you toes. (I hope that makes sense) which took my a few runs to get into the habit of doing but helped ease the pain a lot. I also changed from running on the path to grass, this helped cushion the impact on my knees. I hope this helps.

Think I’d find a sports physio rather than going to your GP. They are likely to be much more experienced with sports injuries.

I had a knee injury from cycling last summer and my GP took one look at me (51 and slightly overweight) disregarded everything I said to him about cycling and diagnosed gout. So I disregarded his expertise and went to see a sports physio. He assessed the knee seeing what movement I had and which directions I could move it myself before diagnosing bursitis (and the specific bursar which was inflamed).

I was off the bike for about 3 weeks but that was a whole lot quicker than it would have been if I’d left it to the GP

I can completely empathise with you! I had knee issues back in Week 4, took a week off and it cleared up. I have been wearing knee braces every since, no further problems at all - graduated in November and was doing really well, heading for my first park run too, and then I did a different route for my 5K that had some small hills, well, my right knee didn't like that at all and has been very painful every since. Had no running for 5 weeks now, apart from a couple of short shuffles to test my knee, feeling very frustrated and grumpy to say the least! I haven't been to the doctor, have been icing it, doing knee strengthening exercises and just resting it - like you I could hardly walk down the stairs and if I sat for any length of time it would cease up. Went out yesterday morning for a short 10 min shuffle and I'm pleased to say that although I can still feel it, it seems to be on the mend, so I intend to keep up my home treatment and gentle short runs and hope that I can sort it out. If it gets worst again though I will definitely go to doctor, I refuse to believe that I am going to have to give up running, that just isn't an option. I'm 58 and 30lbs overweight which I'm sure doesn't help!

I have also been and have a gait analysis, turns out I was running in totally unsuitable shoes so I have invested in a proper pair and am hoping that will help too.

This might help knee-pain-explained.com

Rest and treat it carefully and if it persists consult a GP or physio.
