clothing for running in the cold

On my last run I felt my nose feeling very cold at the start. After about 5mins of running forgot about it. It made me think though about the best clothes to wear when it really gets cold. Don't want to go out looking like the Michelin man with too many layers. Any advice anyone?

Dress for 10degrees warmer is the usual advice. Once running you soon warm up. Try and be warm when you set out.

For me

thin gloves (and a thicker ones when really cold) that usually end up in my pocket, then are on and off depending on distance.

Thin base layer and a long sleeved top. Technical fabric if possible.

Lightweight jacket.

Buff - loads of uses but over nose&mouth to warm air before it hits your lungs, especially if asthmatic tendencies. Keeps ears toasty too.

Long trousers (although I ran all last winter apart from approx twice in capris)

I had the same thought a few weeks ago on a really windy day. I nipped into JD Sports while I was in town and spotted a long sleeve Karrimor running top, and it was 50% off, so only paid £15 for it. I’ve worn it for my past 4 runs and it’s great! Just enough to keep the cold chill off your skin and doesn’t get too hot or clingy or anything when your body warms up! Really soft material and the sleeves pull up well which I prefer as I find the fresh air on my arms refreshing when I’m on a long run!

Shop around and if your not sure get something that’s discounted or in the sale just to try out and find what works best for you 😊

Good luck and keep going! x

Think I spotted those tops in Sports Direct - was very tempted! This is an interesting question because only this morning I was asking my other half the same thing - he is a seasoned runner and comes with me for support, although he walks while I run (at the same speed!) because I run far too slowly for him! He advised the same thing, dress for what you will need when you are warmed u, even if that means you are a bit chilly to start with (not point in having extra layers that you will need to take off and carry) - I have migrated into long running trousers now, with a Karrimor breathable long sleeved top over a vest top - for now this is enough for me to be warm, but I do have gloves and a beanie hat ready for the when the weather takes a colder turn. At that point, not sure what other layer I should add, I'm feeling that I might need something to keep out the wind, but can't run in a 'Mac' thing because it's like running in a bin bag - anyone got any suggestions for an outer layer that won't overheat?

Definitely think layers, and if the top layer zips all the way down it’s easy to take off.

In the winter I wore long leggings (I’m usually in capris or shorts), a vest or top and a zip up jacket, running gloves and a buff for my ears. The jacket often came off after 10 or so minutes running (tied round my waste), but could go back on again for the cool down walk.
