Sore hips

Hi all. I’m usually a lurker but I’m hoping for a bit of advice. I’ve been consolidating 2-3 runs a week for a couple of months but, without fail, the morning after a run (usually 5k but occasionally 3-4K if I’m tight for time) my hips really ache. I don’t know if it’s my age (I’m 47). I had expected it to ease off by now. Surely these muscles are used to it?!! I ought to add that I also walk A LOT, usually c16k steps a day and have been doing that for a couple of years. Am I doing too much? Thank you

If you’re used to that walking it’s not too much, certainly with respect to the running. Your muscles will still be developing for a while yet, I think it’s a couple of years of running to get them fully conditioned... but aching would diminish pretty quickly during that process, and you’re a few months in. It could be worth consulting a physio, possibly even having a full gait analysis to see if there’s any corrections you can make to your running style.

My hips ache I walk a lot too but that’s fine. You can do various hip exercises on a daily basis at home. Cross training on non run days is good. Yoga and Pilates are good as well. Do some hip swings before each run 🙂

I worked with a PT recently and all my exercises on the floor involved my hips, strengthening and stretching them to open them up Yoga is excellent as you can walk away from a session feeling much freer 🙂
