Went out in the rain at ten to seven this morning, armed with a new playlist which helped hugely. I've discovered a way to find songs with a consistent speed (in terms of beats per minute), which slows me down at the start of the run, and keeps me going at a reasonable pace towards the end.
I realised a few runs ago that Nadine Shah's track Holiday Destination was a good steady plodding pace, and then used songbpm.com to check its beats per minute. Then I searched on jog.fm for songs with that bpm, and set up a playlist on my phone using my music streaming app to play the ones I liked.
No association with either of these websites, I just found them really useful.

Thanks for the tips. Tempo is so important and it's so hard at the start of the run when you're feeling great and strong not to set off too fast. Keep up the good work!
Nadine Shah is great. I've definitely been listening to music that's probably way too fast but the really upbeat stuff is the only thing that gets me moving in the morning!
Well done completing week 4, I'm one run behind you. You’re now all set to beat the infamous week 5!
You could have five minutes worth of more upbeat stuff for the warm-up walking, then slower to pace your running.
It's kind of ironic, I know. Every time I get the 'you can slow down now' from Sanjeev, I feel like pointing out I'm really not slowing down. I'm just walking rather than running.
Yes, good idea I'll give it a go, I do like the idea of tweaking the music to help you through that's a great! I'll have a play with the sites you've suggested - many thanks. Honestly, you don't know what you've started here, My other half is going to go crazy at me perfecting my playlist...!
Oh I think music is the key! Once I’m past the first 10 mins and relax a bit more I think my body just goes either the music and I don’t need to think about it too much! I rewarded myself with new tracks and bought one of the now-running compilations, love it! Fresh air, music and some time alone 😃
A slow start is a good idea. I don't run with music any more as I need to be alert to traffic with all my runs being on country roads, but I used to use a metronome app to control my bpm. This has reminded me - thank you! - I may dig out the app from the bottom of the phone and start doing that again!
