what are the best shoes

Can anyone recommend the best shoes for men? I think I have a very basic pair of trainers at the moment which may be ok for now but as the long runs start I feel I may need an upgrade. don't really want to spend silly money though and just pay for a name.

The best trainers for somebody else will probably not be the best trainers for you. You should go to a reputable retailer and have your gait analysed so that you can be fitted with something appropriate to your specific body. Maybe check out a few shops online first so you know that you're shopping somewhere that doesn't ONLY sell ones you can't afford, and explain your ideal budget to the assistant when you visit the shop?

I am FAR from an expert. But I treated myself to a proper fitting at the end of Week 3 and am loving my new trainers.

Yes. Blue ones. You definitely need blue ones.

It is harder to give you an indication of the model or brand, but here is a list of the things to think about:

Your height, weight, distance run per week, what running surface(s) you run on, feet width (some brands are available in widths), your gait (toe, heel, mid-foot landing), your pronation (under/over/neutral), preference for toe-drop, preference for stiffness or support, preference for cushioning, preference for light/heavier shoe.

A visit to your local independent running store (hint: it is not a warehouse on the edge of town) will work you through the things to think about, probably analyse your running gait, find a selection of shoes that fit your budget, and send you off with a pair of shoes that suit you (and offer a guarantee if you don't get on with them).

No - green!

Does anyone DO green?

I agree with the comments about going to a reputable sport shop. I recently did so and had gait analysis done. I am now the owner of a lovely pair of Brooks that take my orthotic insert and hug my feet. Has made such a difference.
