Hi,

I'm new here 😀 trying to get fit and lose a few pounds. Haven't ran in years so off to buy a new pair of trainers tommorow. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Hope you're all had a great bank holiday weekend 💙

Welcome!

If you have any trainers they’re probably good enough for week 1, maybe 2,3,4,5! What you need to do at some point in all likelihood is get a gait analysis to get the right shoes. This means a trip to a specialist running shop and a go on a treadmill... that needs you to be able to run in one minute, or so, bursts. So it may be worth holding off buying new running shoes tomorrow.

Hydrate lots, sip water all day every day. Relax in the warmup, go slow in the run, and believe in yourself. Be prepared to dig deep and use your mind to push you on... your legs may need time to adjust. You can do this!

Welcome, I am fairly new too. Just finished week! My advice is go slow and surrender to the process. Don't worry about distance or pace. Jogs about the same speed as walk are perfectly good, I've been told. Lots of beginners on here and lots of people to give you advice. Let us know how you get on with your first run :)

Hi Maggie - go for it - I just started this week and got myself some running shoes to see if I like it but if I get on well then will have that gait test at some point. I made the mistake of not doing stretches and tonight my calves were a nightmare but thanks to the support on here I know am more aware. Good luck - I feel great afterwards!! X

Good on you. I found a few things really useful; get all your stuff ready before you need it - water, iPhone/iPod (fully charged)! Eat well during the day and drink water. Run slowly as it’s about keeping going, and reward yourself with some good for you snacks when you’re back home- my favourite is avocado. I found Brooks trainers great. The programme is great- enjoy.
