Ok that one was a bit of a struggle, that extra 30 seconds really makes a difference, at least to the running parts. Somehow the longer walks seem shorter than last week’s.
So here’s why I think I struggled:
1. New running shoes - exactly what I needed! But they made me over confident so...
2. ...I completely failed to pace myself! You do get cocky when there’s a literal spring in your step.
3. It’s a step up from what I’m used to. Can’t really feel bad about that. But again the overconfidence didn’t help. On Wednesday I will aim for the exact right amount of confidence now I know what I’m in for (“in for” just autocorrected to “unfit”, which... yeah.)
4. My preparation didn’t quite go as planned. Two hours before I run I like to have a banana, a snickers and a handful or two of nuts and raisins. The bananas I bought today had red fungus running through them and the bag of nuts had a bit of grit in it that possibly cracked my tooth! Snickers was nice though.
Despite all that I had a good run. First three went great, apart from when a car pulled out and blocked the pavement and I had no choice but to wait for it to move.
After the fourth run I was really out of breath and the right side of my chest was a little tight and painful so I couldn’t take a satisfying deep breath straight away (you know, the kind that really feels like it’s filling every corner). I paused and extended the recovery walk after that one until I was breathing more comfortably but then the last two, much slower runs went a lot better.
So I’m hot, I’m tired, I’m sweaty and disgusting but I feel really good right now and might literally be glowing. I’m looking forward to the next attempt.
Sorry for the really long post, turns out I like talking about it almost as much as I like doing it.
